Kinja'd!!!

So I have been considering a GTI as my next vehicle. Since I now have a full time job with decent pay, the wanting is even more so. I saw a post on the main page earlier today about GTI pricing being super low due to sales, etc. Just looking on autotrader/cars..com, there are several base models on sale for $19,xxxk. That’s 7k off MSRP. My only issue is that these dealers are 300+ miles away, and being my first new car purchase, I want to keep things local and easy. However, all around here (Columbus, Ohio), dealers want MSRP or just under it, so $25k+.

Is there a way to make dealers match pricing with other non-local dealers? Or just suck it up and have someone go with me?

Also, is there anything I’d be missing by getting the base ‘S’ model? Everything looks the same besides leather.

I’m sure others here can give you much better advice, but given that if a local dealer matches an out of state dealer you’re more likely to service the car at their dealership, I think it’s at least worth taking a shot at getting them to match the price.

If you go with the higher end model, you’ll be missing out on the best feature the GTI has to offer: plaid.

Oh I’ll definitely stick with an S/Sport/SE model. Plaid all the way.

Try White Allen in Dayton just to see if they’ll match that price.

They gave me a hilarious deal when I bought mine last year. My purchase was quite a bit unusual though.

I ordered an S with the Performance package. VW decided they couldn’t be bothered to make a car equipped as I wanted it anymore. Waited 4 months to find out they stopped making them. Dealer found an SE with the Performance pack for me. They sold it for the same price as an S, including my SCCA discount of $500 under invoice, AND swapped out the leather seats for the plaid cloth ones from the S trim.

So I basically stole my car.

Haven’t had much in the way of issues. I’m pretty happy with my purchase thus far.

I’ve posted a bit about it. You’ll see it all in my history here.

I just looked at Autotrader, $21k for a GTI is a smoking hot deal!

Yes it is. I was holding off on a car purchase until I found out about these prices today. Practically 1/3rd off. Unreal.

As a fellow Columbus resident, our VW dealers do seem to have a problem with them not negotiating on GTIs. I haven’t tried Hatfield VW but MAG and byers were really weird about it.

I’d drive a couple hundred miles for thousands off the MSRP of a GTI though

So drive 300 miles to save $7000.........?

What’s the debate about?

Show the price to your local dealer to see if they’ll match it, if they hesitate for one second, hop in your car and boogie.

I’ve brokered a bunch of GTI deals across the country in the past few months and I can tell you that those super cheap prices are probably not legit. They are rebate stacked with the $1000 loyalty bonus, and other discounts you probably don’t qualify for. Also, some rebates are regional, so a dealer may be able to offer an extra $1000 or so to their local customer but not to an out of state buyer. The best thing you can do is get an actual “out the door” price from those far away dealers and compare that to a local quote. If they are legit a lot cheaper, maybe have the car shipped.

Drop me a line if you think you may want some more assistance.

I might email Hatfield for the hell of it.

That’s basically my plan at this point; I just didn’t know if there was some agreement between VW dealers or something. I’ll use local dealers for test drives, and buy elsewhere.

The SE has leather seats. At least it did when I bought mine last year.

Also if you’re not a member, join the SCCA. VW has a $500 below invoice pricing offer for SCCA members. It’s $80 for a year. Even if you never attend an event it’s worth it.

You can find all the info on Vortex.

I just checked Autotrader, they have a decent deal on a white GTI S. I have a feeling the incentives will only increase as the 2018 models are a mid cycle refresh

Getting to drive your brand new car a couple hundred miles home is fun.

The only reason I don’t want to wait as long is that I currently own a VW, so I would get the $1000 loyalty discount which appears to expire at the end of this month. I could be wrong.

You are correct, SE comes with leather standard.
