Kinja'd!!!

I don’t know about everybody else, but I love the Porsche 996 911 because of the prices one could go for. A mechanically distressed one could go for about $8,000. You may be thinking “Why would you buy a broken german car instead of a a camry” or some other thing Tavarish would say. But if I could rebuild a salvage Honda Civic with my dad, then learn to drive said civic, all while being 12, I could probably fix a Porsche. Anyways, The only thing I don’t like about the 996 are those filthy things Porsche calls headlights, but fear not my friends there is a fix. And it’s not the rims .

Kinja'd!!!

When you see this image what do you think you see, if you answered a riced out 997 or 991, you would be wrong because this is actually a 996! This 996 is the result of a body kit / front conversion sold in many places on the internet for only about $2,000 ! What this kit means is that you can have the affordability of a 996 and the looks of a 997! This video shown below is a replica 996-based GT3 RS 4.0 made by a company called “Xclusive Customs” who makes most of the conversions on youtube and I think we can all say its stunning and all for under 15k.

Then again I might be wrong and I could just buy a Mercedes CL55 AMG with 493 HP

First posted on my kinja in January

Edit: as pointed out by Alfalfa Fillets Falafel because he’s holding a thermal detonator! , some front end conversions exist for under $1,500 , and while I like the conversion done in the video above, I felt I kind of owed it to him to add this.

The 996 definitely isn’t horrible, idk where you got that from people love it, it was really only hated for the headlights and I’m bearing, but it’s definitely not hated or anything like that.

Other than the Ims bearing it’s as reliable (or unreliable) as any other VAG product, it’s a great car and it really doesn’t need some 997 copycat body kit to make it special.

The people that do 997 swaps are the same people that wanted a 997 to begin with an settled for a 996.

$2000? For 500-1000 you can get a kit that just takes care of the fried egg headlights if you care that much. Then it just looks like a 996 minus the only real cosmetic travesty, instead of another guy trying to look like he has more money.

Or... you could just drive it as a 996 and not be a 997 poseur

I like it. Now just to do something about the engine and the interior!

The interior is easy, but why would you take out the engine

Just Google “996 headlight conversion”

Just do an oil fed IMS bearing kit and drive the piss out of it. Can’t see the headlights from behind the wheel.

Now that you mention it, 296hp is fine for me. So just the interior.

The headlight thing is something that only car people get worked up about. And it seemed to have spawned mostly in Porsche purist circles, which I don’t know why other car people buy into their mindset anyways. I’ve shown my car to friends and family and I’ve even asked a few of them about the headlights. Of the maybe four people I’ve asked one liked them and the others had no opinion either way.

I’ve only driven my little underpowered 996 twice but I can assure you, it’s not horrible. It’s pretty damned near impossible to make something with a 6 speed, RWD, 300 horsepower(260 in my case) and that weighs 3200 pounds horrible. Dont believe everything you read on the Internet.

Also, something, something race car...

I probably should have specified that I dont think the 996 is horrible, in fact its my favorite 911 Generation, but I f*cking hate those headlights

lol no. I’d rather keep the 996 headlights, even the early fried eggs than spend any sort of money to be a 996 1/2 and appease the masses who follow the gospel of the air cooled purists. Also can’t help but laugh at the hot take over the Porsche Twist wheels.

All images got kinja’d.

If you just forget about other generations of the 911 for a moment, the headlights would no longer matter as much.

If it’s still not to your fancy, others have addressed it in more interesting ways.

Beats taking cues from the 997.

Ok, I’m a little confused about the interior though. Short of ripping it all out, it seems like you’re stuck with the steering wheel unless you want to be sans airbag.

Yup. Never gotten a bad comment on my headlights from anyone at PCA meets either. Or trackdays. Or randos on the street.

Exactly. I love my 996. I love how it looks, love the sound, love how it drives. People talk to me and tell me how much they like it when I park, and at cars and coffee and PCA meets no one has had a bad thing to say about it. If the IMS thing is a worry, fix it, but don’t spend money ruining it with a conversion. Just buy the car you want from the start.

While I do agree with you, I’ll disagree as well. I’m doing my 996 cause I can’t afford a 964 or 993. Lol
