After an official diagnosis of “we’re not sure, but that ain’t right” Hyundai are replacing the entire transmission, bell housing, and clutch (#3!) under warranty. Of course I’d prefer this hadn’t happened, but I’ve been well taken care of and I really do appreciate the good customer service. Now my only problem is going to be choosing between a WRX and the N line once it’s released...

I’m surprised your car hasn’t fallen under your State’s lemon law, 3 clutches? Yeah give me a different car.

It’s above the mileage in the statute but still under warranty. Plus, their customer service has been pretty exceptional. My damages have been limited to minor inconveniences, so as annoying as this is, I’m willing to not go nuclear with people who are decent to work with.

Hyundai seems to have a lot of issues with their performance manual transmissions. A guy I know with a gen coupe had pretty much the same thing happen to him, went through 3 transmissions in less than 30k miles, then ditched the car.

If you reallllly want to duck trans problems the 5+1 in the WRX isn’t nearly as good of a bet as the real 6 speed in the STI.... that thing is real stout of course then you get to blow ringlands and spin bearings... maybe the FA with the 5+1 is really the better option

I’ve not heard the differentiation between a “real 6 speed” and a 5+1 before. What’s the difference?

The new WRXs have a 6 speed manual transmission, but it is very important not to confuse that “6 speed” with an actual STi 6 speed. The 15+ WRX is best thought of as being the old 5 speed with viscous center diff, open front diff(with all of its faults) with an extra gear shoved into it. The STi 6 speed is far beefier and can handle gobs of power and abuse with minimal complaint, has an electronically adjustable limited slip diff on the transfer gear (DCCD) and a regular mechanical limited slip dif on the front axle.
