Which T56 unit are you running? Im still unsure if I should go after a T56 Magnum or a TR6060. Its currently general consensus that a regular T56 will not last in the proposed build for my car, and I do not want to blow up a trans to find out the hard way.

Basically the same trans. “Magnum” is the aftermarket name for the 6060.

It is a M12 GM unit (factory for the GTO) or the id tag would be TUET-2066

I was told the T56 Magnum in the Vipers (the recommended trans if I cant find a TR6060) is different.

The T56 Magnum (specifically) is not a Viper trans. You were misinformed.

“Viper spec” was the thing to do to a standard T56 before the Mag/6060 came about. People still do that as you can end up upgrading past the factory strength of the Mag/6060.

The TR6060 is the OEM code for the Magnum. Pretty much the exact same trans.

This is why I ask.

I guess that solves that issue. The current Vipers are doing just fine with the TR6060, so it may just be the final answer. When I get closer I have to measure a trans and check horizontal clearance. Should bolt right up. Hopefully.

What’s your intended hp/tq level? Are you anticipating needing a fluid cooler added to the trans?

The anticipated numbers (based on a similar motor build) land in the ballpark of 540hp and 650ft-lbs. Its a 426 stroker from a 392 HEMI, but the cam I am looking at will give most of the power below 4000RPM (custom grind, I dont have the specs handy at the moment). No nitrous, no power adders. Its a fairly mild build for a 426 stroker, but if its anything like the motor its based on, it will have very violent launches, assuming the tires hook up. I had planned on a trans cooler to keep the factory appearance (Magnums did not come factory with a manual, but the NAG1 does have a factory trans cooler). Rear gearing is also more mild than the car this is based on because I would rather not cruise on the highway at 3400RPM, so I have 3.06 gears wrapped around the Wavetrac.

The running theme for the car is overbuild, and of course, measure twice, cut once.

Ok, thanks for posting!

Regarding cooling, I really meant drilling the trans, adding a pump and sprayer, etc but I think that may be overkill.

A TR6060 seems like it would be perfect for your build. I’d also get a blowproof bellhousing from Quicktime or a place like that.

Launches will be hard with good tires, and the weight of the car will not be in your favor, but the 3.06's will help with durability. If you can get the TR6060 out of a Viper it has a closer ratio gearset that will be stronger but you’ll sacrifice torque out of the hole and mileage on the highway. I think a stock 6060 might be fine strength wise, but that may be a question for a Tremec builder like D&D or RSG.

I hadnt actually thought of the bellhousing, but yes, that will definitely be on the list. I was definitely planning on a driveshaft loop (I dont plan on being a regular at the drag strip, but they do require it for cars that run similar times to the guys Charger that Im loosely copying).

My end goal is ported/polished heads, custom cam, Borla ITB intake, 426 stroker crank, a beefy set of connecting rods, and a full roller rocker set. Theres parts I havent priced out or really looked into much, but the goal is to have a motor that is built for the hard launches, but is durable enough to autocross or take to the track once in a while. Ive been keeping an eye out for a RAM 3500 with the optional 6.4L because its an iron block. Im not complaining about weight, my biggest reason is that a 392 Challenger would probably be whipped to the moon and back while a work truck probably not so much. Re-sleeving the cylinders and doing basic cleanup will get the motor ready for the stroker crank, theres no need to bore anything out for the crank Im looking at. Trying to get to a 426 without reinventing the wheel because the manual swap is where the trouble starts. Luckily I think I have enough of the swap planned out that it will actually work.

Im still a ways away from doing the motor build, but when I get there, Oppo will know.

Wow, sounds like you really did your homework!

The bellhousing is nice to have because, honestly, you never know. It won’t be a 350hp “normal” car anymore, you’ll have a lot of power and you’ll want to romp on it hard. Clutch explosions happen.

Driveshaft loop is a no brainer. I’ve sent more than one DS into floorboards, you don’t want to dick with that over $60 or so.

I believe it, Ive seen some clutches explode, so I would like to not have that issue ever.

A one piece driveshaft will be on the list, but I need to shop around when I get there. One guy had a carbon fiber one split apart, so Im not sold on that just yet, but right now the weakest link of the build happens to be the axles. Im running 600hp axles currently, but theyre an OEM part, so while theyre really stout, a few hard launches will push them hard.

The biggest issue I have is that finding a 3500 with the 6.4 is like searching for unicorn tears. A friend of mine actually owns one, but its too clean and he’s not about to let me rip the motor out of his work truck just because its what Im searching for. I guess I cant blame him.

There’s a bunch of places that make good driveshafts; Denny’s is the one I’ve used and I can’t imagine their stuff breaking.

How many of those trucks were even MADE? I’d guess most 3500s were diesel.
