Kinja'd!!!

Yes, you are reading that title right.

So, I was browsing Kijiji (for those that don’t know it’s a Canadian site where people can sell and buy stuff off other people in person). As usual I was looking at cars and decided to just look up Chevrolet S-10s (one of the last remnants of the domestic “small truck”). And then I found this ad:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This guy sacrificed a perfectly good ‘87 S-10 to perform an electric conversion and get a range of 40-50km on golf cart batteries.

I know I’m a fan of imports, but even I gotta admit this is sad (small trucks are another one of my favourite categories of automobiles). In any case, the dude is offering $4K CAD for it, so if any fellow Jalops feel like gutting this thing to put a petrol engine in place of the electric wiring (or have the money to put Tesla parts in the existing electric setup), have at it.

Or one of these:

I worked at Ball Aerospace with a guy who had one of these back in the early aughts. So weird

I completely forgot they did a factory S10 electric. Crazy thing is I remember running into this Wiki article years ago looking up stuff on the subject old EV coupe GM made.

Still though, an ‘87 S10 as the choice for an electric conversion? Gotta admit that’s somewhat sad.

I saw one of these at a C&C last year. Still had a manual transmission.

That’s actually impressive. But how the heck do you manually shift an electric car? Or are you referring to seeing an ‘87 S-10 in general? :P

No idea. I’m guessing it wasn’t a very powerful motor, so you need the ratios. The motor was built to pair right up to the transmission.

They don’t have a clutch but you can vary the gear ratio so you can get better acceleration in 1st and higher top speed in 5th for example. But due to the torque of the electric motor you can just leave it in any gear and drive it like an automatic.

Back in 2001? This is basically what EV enthusiasts did, they built their own electric conversions.
