I just saw the new video from Doug De Muro about the Qvale Mangusta.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

That left me wondering: What is the cheapest rare car you can buy today?

But how can you calculate that? It should include production cars only. So the weird custom on-off buy Billy Bob somewhere in a shed for $500 count. A one-off Bugatti neither. Otherwise I could just kick a dent in the door and call it a one-off done by an artist.

So how can you calculate that? Maybe be numbers produced*average value=the cost to buy them all?

So for wich car you have to have the least money to buy all of them.

Let’s try!

The Qvale Magusta’s number is $10,000,000. (284*34,900=9,911,600)

Are we talking low-production options like this 351C 4-speed Mach 1?

Or maybe the unloved, low-production cousin of a more common production model like this GMC Caballero?

Maybe a super-rare combo on a relatively rare version of a common production model like this manual-transmission H3T?

Or are you looking for a sales flop because the manufacturer misjudged their core demographic like this Mercury Cougar XR7?

Or how about a Saab ?

Shouldn’t matter, I guess. I would consider a new car as long as a signifcant number is produced or will be produced (or even not). If you bought the first Mustang GT350 you would have the cheapest rare car for a short period of time as well as you can expect the numbers rack up.

If on the other hand the run is limited anyway that isn’t a problem as you can simply calculate the number to buy all ever produced.

If we’re going by that, Solstice might be close.

Total from 2006-2010, 65724 rolled off the Wilmington plant. They only wholesale for about 7-8000 CAD at an auction.

Nice to see Doug doing stuff on obscure cars. I really like his S-Cargo.

They only made a handful of 1983 Chevrolet Cavalier convertibles and they have a unique look. You could still probably buy a mint one for $500.

How about a smart roadster in the USA? I ran the VIN when the ad was still open, it’s legit! The car’s VIN history would suggest it should have been sold for much less, which might explain why the dealership took the ad down.

Depends. If it is immediatly distinguishable for the average enthusiast it does count. If you have to make up the rare status like “it’s the only one with red paint, green snake leather seats, a square steering wheel and refitted sunroof” it’s like the kick in the door-thing. I would think that accounts for said Mustang.

Same accounts for the Saab. A Saab 9-4X would count as only 814 or so were produced. Average price at autrotrader is around $16,500, therefore you would need about $13.5 million to buy them all.

Sales flop do count of course!

By that metric, I’d say the Solstice coupe would win.

The Smart Roadster is indeed a nice car. If only they had build the six cylinder version!

Too bad it’s fairly common car in Europe.

I like to think “what does it cost to buy them all, every single ever produced.”

Now find out how many were build. I’m not going to do this for every proposed car.

If you could snatch them for $2,000 wich is farfetched you would still need $131,000,000.

Not a nice rareness/price proportion.

Of course I love the werid Soltice.

Problem is Solstice Coupes are trading at insane prices... if anything I didn’t even factor that in.

The roadster’s downfall was rushed engineering. :(

The company was too young, trying to expand too fast. The roadster ended up on the road with water leaks (including a chance that a leak would develop over the SAM computer), turbos that would sometimes eat themselves, and engines that often needed rebuilds every 40k miles. It’s a lovely car indeed, but definitely helped bring smart to their knees back then.

Sorta on topic, I’d totally love to buy every smart crossblade ever made. :D Only 2000 of them, right? lol

627 apparently. So, if they all exist and you can buy them for 500, that’s $313,500. I’m sure there are plenty of better examples, but it is interesting.

R&T agrees. Do you know for how much they go? But I feel we have a strong competitor here.

Even if you would have to pay $5,000 for them you would only need about $3 million.

See, that’s exactly one of the weird, rare affordable cars I wanted to see surface!

1,243 Mazda 323 GTXs were sold in North America (can’t find global production numbers). Conservative estimates hover around 600 still surviving after many have been crashed on the streets and on rally stages.

They generally go for about $2,500 depending on condition.

Buy ‘em all for $1.5 million.

Apparently they hold their value very well. I’ve seen many examples in the EU selling for close to their original price. A few years ago, there was an example with 0 miles (idk how) sold in Mexico for $43,000.

When the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum closed up shop, theirs went for $45,000.

There was a privately owned one in the US that was sold for around $42,000 or so a couple years ago. I think it’s in Florida now.

And I know of one more low mile example owned by a popular smart speed shop in California that was also purchased for an insane amount. I’ve personally seen that car...it’s absolutely mindblowing :D

Surviving doesn’t matter. Otherwise you could buy any Matra Rancho or Renault Fuego. That’d be too easy.

Nice enthusiast car anyways.

What? $40,000 up? That’s crazy! And shatters a good rareness/price proportion as you would leave you with a cost of around $90,000,000 for them all!

Had you ever imagined?
