Yeah, I need to start taking pictures of our expensive/fancy cars here with equal dents before they get repaired to murder this ridiculous Camry specific/ Camry hating stereotype. Sort of hypocritical though if it takes off lol.

Or we could just keep this Camry thing going. Take it to the next level:

“Ha ha STUPID Camry owner is such a lame ass. Spent their money on an absolutely boring car when for that $3,000, they should have spent it on putting a down payment on a used S65 AMG. What a total baffoon, What’s that? A dent in the rear bumper? Oh sooooo typical!”

- well, there is an equal chance of someone else bumped into them with their car recently in a parking lot. Or, since they are in an economy car, maybe the owner doesn’t have the funds at the moment to fix them but indeed has the intention to. The Camry is popular after all, makes sense seeing more of these with an error over a McLaren on the streets.

“Nah!! Just the typical STUPID Camry owner being soooo stupid about cars LOL!! We elite enthusiasts NEVEr have these sort of issues. We are simply superior. Oh...... something something steering feel”

I noticed the Camry dent phenomenon before it became an internet thing. Always the same, in one corner or another. It could easily be another driver’s fault, hitting them, but it’s amusing that it’s always in one rear corner or the other.

I think it’s not so much implying that it’s the owners fault as mocking the fact that the cars are so boring or unimportant that no one bothers to fix them. I find it hilarious

(My mother owns two of them.)

In Michigan it’s called the “Impala dent”.

Really. I’m plenty smart :)

My mom has a Camry with a Camry dent (the rare front spoiler area version). She claims to have no idea how it happened, she could afford to fix it, but just doesn’t care. The steering in the car also appears to be connected by a rubber band, but it is 100% reliable, and kind of quick off the line to 50 or so. It’s a good car that she bought with my recommendation.

I live in the Seattle area, where these sell more than some other places, and most drivers of most cars are fairly oblivious. Where there’s smoke, well, you know.

Alright Trump.

My mother loves her Camries, but she’s a practical person who sees no reason to spend money to fix things solely for aesthetic reasons. Probably pretty typical of a Camry driver. It has nothing to do with financial ability to afford the repair. Oddly, she hasn’t yet developed a Camrydent in either vehicle.

She also thinks the Camrydent phenomenon is hilarious.

No thought at all on how it’s always skewed? Just following “what they say”? One can make so many other stereotypes about so many other cars, yet the Carmy gets the heat. It’s forced onto the people already and it’s a damn shame. Really hateful things are being said throughout and it sounds like you’re taking the side fanning the flame. “Steering is like it’s connected by a rubber band, has dent, doesn’t care, but drives pretty good .” Reminds me of this.

Well I won’t. It’s pathetic and beyond childish. Pointing and laughing isn’t cool. Simply assuming most people don’t care or are clueless is ridiculous and stretching beyond the aspect of the car. I am really starting to think it’s a branch extension of prejudice. People make assumptions given the car and where there’s smoke, well, you know.

Wow, easily offended Thursday is upon us. Mellow out, simmer. And if you’re going to quote me, actually quote me :)

A number of Camry drivers are practical, and don’t waste money on cosmetic damage. They also might not be the most skilled at maneuvering. I doubt many of them are offended, why are you? Heck, I pointed out the “Camry dent” to my mom, who just shrugged and didn’t care. She doesn’t use the car as part of her identity, probably like most Camry drivers. “hateful” is your subjective translation. There’s a not so fine line between jest and “hate”. Nothing is skewed.

Plenty of cars have stereotypes. Feel free to laugh at any of them, even cars I drive - I won’t be offended. I live in a wealthy area with lots of sketchy money and idiotically driven highline cars that I can stereotype, too. When someone makes a thread for them, maybe I will join in. I doubt the drivers of those really care, either.

eeeexaclty. Why must enthusiast websites, especially OPPO of all places, find the need to absolutely burn driver’s of these cars? Fanning a very hateful flame. I won’t take part of such a ridiculous and down right childish stereotype.

When so many hateful assumption are made on the part of a car or car culture, that’s when it bothers me. I’m not perfect. I’ve played around the whole Mustang Cars and Coffee thing and like the Camry dent, there are example and many more contradictions to them. Seeing how much K-roll and Jawhawk love their rad rides instantly has me feeling remorse. Not so much sympathy for a Camry by those because it hardly gets defended ever. I’ve been trying for years and years on OPPO and on the FP.

You just keep making assumptions for them dude. Hateful words are what I read sometimes, not my subjective translation. No remorse. Everyone just keeps attacking and picking. I guess the core error of mine is wanting for auto enthusiasts to be fans of ALL things automotive equally. Lolnope. It’s a great mom-car. I have no worries about it stranding her or becoming a maintenance pit. It also sits high enough for her to be comfortable (she doesn’t like my E-class, claims it is too low). She’s had it for 8 years and I think it has had virtually no issues. She’s the type to not replace a car until absolutely necessary, so it might be around a while yet.

Mine has no clue about 2018 models, but I think there’s enough demand for boring sedans to keep a few around. They still sell by the hundreds of thousands.

Not seeing a lot of objectivity there. Maybe you should get some pics of CLA and DB9 dents and start a new meme. I drive what many would call an old man’s car, do I care if someone thinks it? Nope.

I suspect my mother couldn’t care less about what enthusiasts think of her on the road. She’s an older woman in a white Camry. She wants a reliable appliance, it ends there for her. The thoughts of a potential peanut gallery make no difference in her life. If she doesn’t care, why should anyone?

Kinja'd!!! "EL_ULY" (uly)
01/19/2017 at 13:16, STARS: 0

lol not sinking to a level of automotive hate memes. People opinions about “X type of person drives X type of car” is even more silly than the dent issue.

More power to your mom and others who ignore increasingly smug auto enthusiasts.

And for millionth time, ALL cars are appliances that have an equal potential to be fun and boring across the board. Too many contradictions in this biz. Enthusiasts I guess need stereotypes for that reason. Things like “most”, “not all” and “why is it almost always a” are lame shields.

Still my fault for thinking I finally found the right group of car folks into anything and everything automotive without the HATE. There are random signs of hope through the years but.... meh.

Again, difference between hate and jest :)

I agree that all cars have the same potential to be boring - anything on my commute will lose its fun factor fast. I can’t agree that all have the same fun potential, though. One would have to spend an immense amount of money to make some cars fun, and even then, good luck. I think if a huge amount of work is needed for debatable results, then potential isn’t equal. Of course, “fun” is subjective, too. Maybe Camry drivers have fun by not spending much on repairs.

If the constant problem is everyone else, maybe everyone else isn’t the problem.

Kinja'd!!! "EL_ULY" (uly)
01/19/2017 at 14:08, STARS: 0

“spending much on repairs” is one of those things. Those things break also lol :] For some they may need to something to be fun and for some they may not. You know, and equal amount of potential. Equally applies to higher end cars imho. As long as people go into these things with a preconception* aka “derr Camry is boring because derr derr” it isn’t really fair. Jest was what it was, it’s beyond that bruh. Fucking sue me to think and want its fate to be otherwise lol :]

*I really hope that is the correct word. My England is mega poor compared to my Spain. Hell, my Spain sucks compared to my Chilango:]

But they are easier to manage than a Euro car, and cost less to run than a highline Asian car. My mom spends very little to keep her Camry on the road - and that’s a key aspect to that car. All vehicles have some kind of positive, easy to live with is a key to the Camry.

I still don’t know if I can see equal potential, as it will take a lot more time and work to make some cars enjoyable than others. My mom’s Camry has steering and cornering that feels more like my fintail than anything with performance. But that’s not what it was built for. You could make it perform better, but why? Money into the toilet, in my opinion. That doesn’t mean the car is without merit. Heck, I told her to buy it. Reliable, comfortable, and not even particularly slow.

And yes, preconception is the right word :)

Kinja'd!!! "EL_ULY" (uly)
01/19/2017 at 16:25, STARS: 0

Then there are cars meant to be “fun” and totally fail for some reason some say lol. If you sense no steering feel in a car, see a doctor. There isn’t a vehicle out there that I personally can grade the road via the steering wheel. Some more feedback than others, sort of. (Using clever negative buzzwords representing a lack of) steering feel, none.  I just see them as what they are, all appliances/machines driven by people. Fun can be had by all, boring could be had by all, and dents could be had by all equally by no fault of the car.

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)
01/19/2017 at 18:33, STARS: 0

My mom’s car has steering feel, but I am not sure what it is connected to. My grandfatherly E-class feels like a Ferrari in comparative terms of precision. But the way it feels was what the Camry buyer market demands - not seeking fun, not caring much about cars in general, just seeking comfy and easy, a 21st century Oldsmobuick.

Maybe “fun” is the subjective problem - what is fun to a traditional driving enthusiast isn’t fun to the target Camrolla driver. I have serious doubts that bumper corner dent frequency is equal for all makes and models :)

Ever driven a new AMG car or Aston? You can blow on the steering wheel and it will move lol. Drivers don’t care and enthusiasts can very easily be fooled. They might not feel anything in their everyday type car but I sure as hell can. I’ll put my rep on the line as say that a 2016 Corolla S has better steering feel than the new DB11. Also, enthusiasts don’t know a fucking thing about steering feel. I don’t get my jollies off a stupid steering wheel enough to blast a person driving for not caring and assuming they bout an economy car.

Steering feel = orgasm

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)
01/19/2017 at 21:13, STARS: 0

Modern AMG, yes. You can blow on most new steering wheels and it will move. But from my experience, in a Camry, especially a non “sport” (LAWL) model, it’s like there is a network of rubber bands and styrofoam to wade through between the wheel and the various linkages. Almost like an old American land yacht, but a little stiffer. Even my fintail has more weight to it. And I think that’s exactly how it is meant to be. Nice and easy.

Enthusiasts know a few fucking things more than steering feel than those who have no desire to ever drive anything more than a low output no input transportation pod.

Just deal with it and move on. Maybe you get your jollies from misplaced ire, instead? Maybe the Camry dent thing will go away as new models have better cameras and parking assistance. Maybe being grounded to the ground will help, too.

I can’t even fathom that description for it’s steering even if I play along to idiotic douchy enthusiasts standards. People are genuine and smart. Enthusiasts don’t give them enough credit, possibly don’t want to risk any boy racer steet cred, yo!

Keep on bashing people just trying to get to their destination without feeling g forces, exhaust tone, and any other idiotic thing a very low percentage of the market asks for. So fucking what! Sad how that honestly makes you sick. Enthusiasts are perfect I forgot lol.

As long as there are humans, every car is vulnerable to dents, goofy errors, and finding driving pleasure in any vehicle. Completely losing hope in drivers is one thing, bashing them for not enjoying BRAAPS is low, especially on full assumptions in a hobby full of contradiction. Tons!

For enthusasts, life is too short to drive a boring car.

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)

Drive a Camry LE and experience it for yourself. A great appliance, maybe the best out there, but if one likes the tactile world, probably not the best choice, and not a ton of potential for that to change - you’d put enough time and money into it to the point where just buying a more fun car would be more efficient.

A person can be smart. Unfortunately, history proves that people are stupid. Like tomorrow, for example :)

Who cares about street racers and braaaap? That goes by the wayside by the time most hit 30 or so, or when the parents cut them off. Who said anything about sick? Who is bashing anyone about braaps? Strawman much? Are you reading something that only you can see?

There’s a difference between enjoying travel and driving pleasure. The movement towards autonomous vehicles and private cab services tells me a huge amount just don’t care about driving.

My car doesn’t braaap and I don’t want it to. I don’t wear a flat brimmed cap nor do I vape :)

I’ve driven literally thousands of Camry, Corolla, all that when I was a Toyota/Lexus master tech. Great appliances just like all of the Mercedes-Benz, Lotus, Volvo, and Astons here. All cars = appliances, all = equal potential for feel.

Fuckin Trump, or Trompas as we call him here, in a very smart guy. More so in a sense of an evil genius.

Indeed the “driving pleasure” BS odor is hitting hard lol. The impasse* seems to be you thinking some cars are purposely manufactured in a “dull matter” because vast majority of people don’t care about cars. I see ALL cars as just what they are, machines/appliances, that throw a millions claims at people and the experience in simply in the mind of the driver with no direct fault of the vehicle mechanically. Stupid enthusiasts buzz words like, “passion, heritage, soul” are straight up the dumbest things ever imho. Literally 100% opposite views for a fucking dent and steering feel lol.

Skin is very thick here and likewise on caring lol. Bring on autonomous cars and travel pods. I personally don’t give a flip. Who cares. So what.

Maybe driving a car around the back lot of a dealership isn’t the same? Claiming all are equal gives me some reason for doubt. If you think a 10 year old 4 cyl Camry has the same “potential for feel” as some actual performance cars, well, keep smoking (oh yeah, you’re in repressive state, maybe don’t).

I see an awful lot of opinion masquerading as fact there, which is all the more amusing when a certain thin-skinned someone rants endlessly about the opinions of others. Your opinion differs from the opinion others, but you have no data to back it up as fact or some kind of automotive moral high ground lolol. Leave it at that and walk away, it’s a battle you cannot win. Talk about BS odor, indeed, some people need to not be downwind of themselves. But hey, the strawman crap leveled off, so that’s nice.

If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t type endless words defending those opinions. Maybe you placed a Camry dent on a beigegrey Camrolla or RAV4 mobile pylon? It’s OK, we all make mistakes. I put a little scrape on a bumper once, but no dent, and I had it repaired, gotta love PDR :)

I know Houston is predominantly oil money (where in my area it is tech money and laundered offshore money). Same dbags, different suits. People read Jalopnik? The radness times to be had in a diesel Tempo I swear. You make it so much more tempting. I feel it in my bones it could be so epic. I think the hydraulic press channel peeps bought one recently.

Oil money has been tough, quite bad for the most part. They keep building warehouses like a mofo though. Perhaps planning for a new boom? Either way these peeps usually get really into building their cars. The younger buyers usually are the ones to get something from the little inventory we carry of the high dollar stuff. There can’t be but a few diesel Tempos still on the road. We had a Tempo in the family for many years, ran it up to 190K miles before my mom sold it on. I remember around 1994-95 seeing a diesel in a junkyard - I took the factory stereo out of it, to replace the one in our Tempo. I didn’t think that one through, and it failed in 6 months. Even then I noticed the diesel model, as it was so unusual. 100K miles and it was junked. Sad! Of all the diesel cars, it wouldn’t be my first choice. You know there was a short run of diesel Camry, and the bumpers then weren’t really susceptible to the Camrydent :)

Oil is probably preparing to have zero tax liability under the great orange one, so they are putting money to work. Nothing wrong with assuming when a mysteriously rich idiot prangs their mysteriously purchased car. When people don’t work for things, idiocy follows.

If I see a diesel Tempo for sale, I’ll let you know :)
