Usually I bring bacon home in the van because whenever that Oscar Meyer Center Cut Thick-Sliced stuff goes on BOGO sale, I like to stock up. But for money, I do detailed commercial analytics & reporting for a gigantic loan portfolio at a major American bank. And I work from home, so that really takes the edge off of the misery. Usually.

Seriously, as a geospatial guy (think GIS, GPS, Remote Sensing), I get my hands in everyone’s business. I do some software development, maintain my servers, conduct geospatial analysis, and write reports. Most of my work is related to infrastructure (think levees, roads, and bridges), and I get to work on all stages from environmental assessment through asset management. Right now I am working on a feasibility study for a proposed toll road, the environmental analysis for a proposed bridge replacement, and the preliminary analysis for a proposed river diversion. Yes, I am juggling all three at the same time. I get one task running in the computer, then turn my attention to another task. When all three are actively processing, I get to post on Oppo!
I love my job.

There is a big debate in the geospatial community whether it is better to be degreed in one field and pick up GIS on the side or be degreed in GIS and pick up the other fields as required. I suggest the most valuable people are the ones with two degrees, in two different fields.
If you are going back to school, find a degree program and get a masters. A certificate will help, but you will start at the bottom as an Analyst. Plan now to get your GISP certification (www.gisci.org).
I do a lot of outreach work with GISCI and I used to teach geospatial courses at a university, so feel free to ask questions.

GIS is good, but we are constantly looking for good CAD designers, mostly working in AutoCad Civil 3D. GIS is mostly about making pretty maps and data basses, very useful to a variety of fields but I think the CAD designers are paid a bit better and have a more fun job.

I’ve been in Automotive Advertising for almost 10 years on various manufacturers including Chevy, Ford, Lincoln, MERCURY , Audi, Mazda, Subaru, and Kia. I’ve worked on everything to regional dealer level work to international campaigns that ran on 3 continents at once. I’ve done almost every job available in an ad agency.
Currently, I’m in what seems like the best job I’ve ever had as a Product Information Specialist.
Yeah, you guessed it, I get paid to be an insufferable know-it-all in regards to cars. I basically make sure the advertisements are correct in regards to the product and I write all those annoying disclaimers. Did you know you can get paid to just “know a bunch about cars?”. Apparently it’s a thing.
