Can Mitsubishi be relevant again?

Clearly the Galant, lancer, and Mirage aren’t going to cut it any longer. In the 90's Mitsubishi was killing it in the US, and awesome brand equity disappeared within a decade. Here’s how to be relevant again in the US.

1) Bring the Pajero back to the US. The Monster was a 9/10's Land Cruiser for 60% of the cost. It was a Land Rover with Japanese build quality. The Sport looked awesome and sold great. Forget te crossovers, bring a real 4x4 back. It goes toe to toe with the Everest and the GX470/Prado overseas, let it restore brand equity here too.

2) Do something with the Eclipse. Make it smaller, make it lighter. Think FWD BRZ. Make it simple, cheap to buy and easy to modify. Go back to gen I and gen II roots, before going off the rails with 3&4.

3) Bring back the Diamonte. Sure, it’s an Infiniti, but the hybrid Proudia would fit the bill nicely.

4) Bring the Triton. Nuff said.

5) A proper sports car. GTO/3000GT.

1. Completely agree. The Mitsubishi Outlandish doesn’t cut it.

2. The DSMs I remember fondly are the AWD turbo monsters. So make it the AWD turbo BRZ that Subaru refuses to build.

3. Eh, I don’t know if that’ll work. Everyone has their own upscale sub-brand lately, even Hyundai. The closest competitor to this would be the Toyota Avalon. Good luck digging into that market.

All that said, it probably won’t happen because Nissan owns Mitsubishi now and already has a significant US presence.

With the Everest/Bronco and most likely the Trailblazer coming to North America, the Pajero just makes sense. The Triton/L200 would make a good Ranger/Colorado competitor too. I think they could use a new Galant as well. Use the Concept-ZT as a starting point for a new Galant. Maybe change the front to fit with Mitsubishi’s current design language.

Mitsubishi sold 11,498 cars last year here in Chile, of those 7,850 were L200/Triton trucks. It’s really sad to see a brand that is basically on life support at the moment, hopefully Nissan will either take it out of it’s misery or bring it back to life.

1. A couple of years ago, I’d say the chances are slim. Now, we’re in the midst of a variety of great off-road capable CUVs and SUVs (Renegade, 4Runner, Armada, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, the soon to be revived Bronco, etc.), so it would make more sense now then it would have back then.

2. Unlikely. Mitsubishi is pretty much completely out of the sport compact game, and they’re certainly not likely to return, especially after the demise of the similar Scion tC.

3. That’s the thing...it’s an Infiniti. Nobody’s gonna choose it over the original, better warranty or not. It would just be another Kia K900.

4. Midsize trucks are in now, so it would make sense, especially since Fiat won’t offer their Fullback version here.

5. Not gonna happen. Mitsubishi has abandoned performance cars, so we’re probably never gonna see another one from them ever again, especially now that Nissan has majority ownership and already has the Z and GT-R.
