Kinja'd!!!

What with being a new parent, starting a new job, maintaining an old ass GM product and going to school and such. I just wanted to drop by and say that I don’t regret buying this gas sucking monstrosity one bit. I quite like it!

That’s all.

What’s all gone into maintaining it so far?

Please share your experience! I might be taking ownership of one of these of similar era...to pull something...

I should have bought one of these instead of an old rusty Toyota. Much regret, much sadness.

Big, comfy, room for days, fantastic in Portland’s snowmageddon (I got to spend 5+ hours in it going 20 miles), pretty easy to work on, tows a camper great, gets 13.8 MPG hypermiling or 13.5 MPG driving like a normal person (city MPG, your results may vary), HUMONGOUS gas tank, really crappy OEM radio... Overall, it’s what you’d expect!

You should have! They’re cheaper than old rusty, Toyotas, too!

Replaced the crappy cast aluminum heater hose fitting, replaced the O2 sensors, fixed the clogged cats, installed a Kenwood head unit (I prefer to keep stuff stock, but the OEM stereo rejected my efforts to make it live), wired up my brake controller, replaced the mangled license plate bracket and license plates (it’s the little things!), installed a transmission temp gauge, and made several trips to the Pick-n-Pull to replace various bits of broken plastic trim on the inside. Still to do: replace hinge pin bushings in both front doors and tend to the squeaky rear drum brakes.

Cool, thank you. What engine do you have?

Oh dear. The one I’m looking at has a 454, so I’m told. What year is yours? I don’t know much about these tbh.

If it’s got a 454 then it’ll be a 3/4 ton. If it’s a ‘96-’99 it will have a Vortec 454. The 3/4 ton comes with seriously beefy components, such as a 4L80E transmission (the half ton got the troublesome 4L60E). You be able to tow anything you want, but forget about gas mileage. The big block will most likely do around 10 city/12 highway.

That makes sense since the original owner bought it as a tow vehicle. I really need to get more details about it, but the discussion actually started all about the trailer, and the tow vehicle sort of crept into the equation.

Thanks for sharing your expertise!
