Curious if anyone has ever bought the student version. Solidworks charges 150 but some resellers are selling for $90. are they legit and trustworthy? I’m interested in getting it for a couple home hobby projects.

Solidworks gives students 1 year for free. That’s how I got mine last year *sobs*

If you don’t have a need for solidworks in particular I would recommend Autodesk Inventor instead. Autodesk’s student program provides 4 year keys to their products for free and doesn’t require any real proof that you are a student (just pick a school from a list). I had like 4 Inventor keys saved on my old laptop.

They seem legit enough, but it sounds like a pretty good way to get scammed out of money to me. Do you actually qualify to get the student edition? I’d steer clear and save up for Inventor LT if not. What do you have in mind for projects? Myself and a few others around here might be able to whip it up in SolidWork and get you can STL to be printed or drawing to send to a machine shop if it isn’t too complicated.

Seconding this suggestion. I’ve got Inventor and regular old AutoCAD on my personal computer through this, 2 years out of school. You’re not supposed to commenrcialize anything designed on it but for personal projects I’d say it’s fair game.

Get Autodesk Fusion 360, full version is free for hobbyists, and I actually like it better than Solidworks. Other than assemblies taking a bit of getting used to from Solidworks it is not much of a learning curve.

Fusion 360 is pretty similar to inventor and full version is free for hobbyists/students/startups.

Buy it from Dassault instead. Note that the student version does not contain the simulate program, render view, and toolbox library. A big drawback in my opinion.

My school had a copy that they let the engineers on the Formula SAE team have for free. It was nice having it on my computer, and I didn’t miss any of the advanced features that were blocked, but it was very annoying that it expired after one year and I can’t use it any more.
