2016 was not a good year for me when it came to animals, early in the year we lost our 18-19 year old cat Oliver, just due to old age.
At the time we had another orange cat, Lucky, who was just starting to act normal and happy again after having a broken leg, but a couple of days after Oliver died, he passed away too. Then a few months later my amazing 17 year old yellow lab, Jazman, was accidentally run over in the driveway by a visitor when she couldn’t move out of the way in time.
She was a great dog, a good hunter, always happy and cheerful, a bit of a goofball, and had so much heart it was hard to watch. What I mean by that is that even when she was old, out of shape, and couldn’t run more than a minute without getting tired she always wanted to keep playing, or jump in the truck every time we went hunting, she recovered from a broken leg as a pup, and even with a leg that had multiple pins in it she could keep up with the best of them. She also had a thing for really big sticks.
This happened maybe four or five months ago now, and I’ve been feeling better, but finding these pictures and actually writing about it is making me sad all over again.
Now that I’ve thoroughly depressed everybody (sorry about that) I do have some good news! My wife and I got a new puppy!
Her name is Josie, and just like Jazman she is a pure bred yellow lab. She’s around 8 weeks old and already doing really good. She’s already retrieving very well, is sleeping through the whole night without having to go out, and after only a week and a half at home is starting to pick up on the whole don’t pee in the house thing, and is starting to listen to commands. In the next week or two (or once it gets to be bearably warm outside) I plan to start training her for pheasant hunting.
Having a new dog is definitely making me miss Jazman, but having a new pup is very exciting and a lot of fun. She already likes riding in the truck, after having to be in my lap for the first few minutes looking out the window she curls up right next to me, and she’s already getting acquainted with the shop, so hopefully she’ll be an awesome shop dog as well.

I really am sorry to hear about the loss of your pets. Nobody should have to endure that pain.

So adorable! I’m so sorry about Jazmin. A tragic death like that is so very much harder to get over than one from old age and sickness that gives you time to prepare yourself.

Thanks, she’s a really fun little puppy, lots of energy, I took her out to my parents acreage for the first time last week and she had the time of her life, running around, jumping through snow banks, playing with the grass, it was really fun to watch.

Sorry to hear that, but such cute kittens!!! Love the names as well. I’d love to have another cat, but that’s a no go with my wife, at least not until we have an acreage, then I can have shop cats, and shop dogs, I’m going to practically live in that shop.

It was a mixed bag of emotions, she was getting old and was starting to have a hard time getting around, stairs were getting difficult and you could tell that she was starting to struggle, but she still had that happy positive attitude that she always did. Truth be told we were at the point where we started to think about putting her down if things got worse, so I had already started to prepare myself for that, but the accident was still really sudden and not the way I wanted it to happen.

Thanks Skay! It is tough, but Josie is a really fun puppy. I absolutely love labs, one of my roommates in college had one who lived with us for a few years as well and she was a ton of fun. Labs just have so much heart and soul in everything they do that it’s hard not to love them.

Looks like it. Mine was about 80% grown when I brought him home, but he still acted like a puppy. Still does, about 6 years later.

Sorry for your losses, but sounds like they each had long and happy lives with a great owner. I mean look at that top photo! That was one happy trusting kitty.

SigOther chose Yoda, then foster lady said, well, he has a buddy. Vader wasn’t eating and wasn’t going to make it - she put him in with Yoda’s litter, Yoda started messing with him, and he started eating again. How could we say no to both?

Yeah, as long as they are happy, you want to let them keep going. They seem to know when to give up. My retriever mix got leukemia at 7 years old and tried to crawl off into the field to die. She was really suffering. Fortunately we were able to find her and make her passing more comfortable.

What a tough string of losses! Glad they did have long lives, and that you’re able to make this wonderful new buddy. She’s adorable and I love that you have so many activities together.
We got a new kitten two weeks ago, about three months after our beloved 11 year old passed away from an aggressive cancer. We miss him dearly but she’s adorable and her own little rascally self.
Congrats!!! Pets are our hearts.
