Oppoland — Just wanted to officially decree that after discussion with members, Team Oppo has decided to sit out the 24 Hours of Daytona. Due to scheduling conflicts, a run at the 24 was not feasible. We did have a great run in the Roar .

Instead we will focus on developing team members to be eligible for iRacing Endurance events and making drivers more comfortable with road racing (and NASCAR if there are any interested). Hopefully we can assemble a group to run the 12 Hours of Sebring in March.

We have not quite figured out the methods for doing this, but I imagine it will be a combination of hosted tutorials, Oppo/DB articles, official races, and perhaps a league. I have established an official iRacing team and a Discord server so we can communicate with everyone on the team. If any Oppo iRacers have suggestions for topics to cover or things to do leave it in the comments.

Sebring’s definitely happening. Would just be nice to get more people so we can run multi-car teams and more things. Running hosted races just for Oppo would be a blast too.

So how does iRacing handle the assets for team racing? Does each member of the team have to own the car and track or can they be shared across the team? I would be interested in getting back into it for the summer months (running a sim rig as a college student is a bit tricky) but I am not exactly keen on buying cars and tracks for every event.

Indeed, for us to run a 24 Hour and not be super worn out we would have needed at least 4-6 people. For Sebring we will need 2-3. If there is enough interest we could enter multiple cars.

Yes, each team member needs to own the car and the track. The schedule has a list of all the tracks and cars. Many of the events will feature the German GT3 cars, which we were running the Audi in.

idk how much you remember about the sim UI, but essentially the driver in the car will come into the pit stall, ESC out of the car, the next driver will see the “Drive” button light up and they can enter the car. iRacing them has a ~30 second wait to simulate the swap.

I know I am not planning on running every event. My computer will not be able to handle the Nurburgring, so I will skip that one.

It didn’t help the start time kept jumping around...think my team had to shuffle our schedule 2 or 3 times to make it work for everyone.

Since we decided to skip, I did not know the start time had moved. I thought it was always at 8AM EST on Saturday?

The last time I played was Oct-Dec of 2014 I believe. I am not sure since I stopped before an upgrade but I may actually have met the requirements for a D license. I will have to see about getting back into it this summer.

I don’t if we got bad info or what, but weren’t sure until a couple days beforehand. As for the actual event, I couldn’t believe the amount of server issues. We were running top 5 overall in our split before iRacing took a dump and knocked us out. Came back to finish 9th.

How much does one need to do to get the proper license to be allowed to run?

It depends. To run the 24 (or Sebring) at the very least (assuming you have a computer and a controller), you would need.

Daytona (14.95) + Audi LMS GT3 (11.95) + an iRacing subscription ($13 minimum) = $39.90.

This does not include a wheel or any other extras.

In order to qualify to run those races (i.e. attain a Class C License), all you need is a subscription. If you think you can get to Class C in one month, then it is $13. You can reach that license solely with the Miata, just need to have the schedule fall into line.

Interesting. I do have the wheel already. So it would really would probably take two months to be realistic.

Depends how dedicated you are. Rookie Mazda races take place every hour. If you don’t hit anything (note: not win all the races) your safety rating will increase. You can increase it all the way to a Class D 4.0. Then do 4 Advanced Mazda time trials and then you have a Class C.

It is a bit silly.

I have heard people do it in a couple days, but yes, for the more casual person (racing a couple races per week), it’ll take a couple months.

Okay. Fair enough. Thanks for the info.

This sounds pretty interesting. I’d like to try to participate in this team stuff when I have a wheel and rig set up plus all the required necessities.
