I learned the value of a tiny shield when I visited a renaissance festival as a kid. One of the “knights” had a shield that was little more than a thick pad on his left hand. It was like he took a small bar stool seat and put a strap on the back. He challenged anyone to hit him with a sword. Try as I might, I couldn’t do it. Granted, I was 10 at the time, but it was the first time I realized that a giant shield wasn’t always necessary.
I’d still like to see him block an arrow....
