My commute recently changed. It used to be ~13 minutes, and is now up to 25 minutes. Rather than focusing on the bad, I’m trying to focus on the positives:

- I get to drive by a Tesla Model S most days
- It’s more time to listen to music, or to think.
- There was a very nice sunrise this morning
- It’s still a shorter commute than I had when living in another city
- At the end of the day, I get to pull into my own garage.

So, what do you like about your commute?

When I take public transit:

-Walking to the subway is nice

-I don’t have to drive

When I drive:

-On ramps are fun

-Most of my commute isn’t on a highway

My commute is about as good as I can hope for. Takes about 20 minutes and it’s largely free of trouble. Lately it’s been better since they tore up our parking lot since that means I’m working from home more

Listening to my music I guess. It’s an hour on a dreary motorway each way, so seeing the positives aint easy...

I like the fact that on my commute there is never traffic and I can wake up at the last minute and always make it to work on time and I usually get to see a dog or two plus a cat or two.

My commute is about 100 feet (including a stop at the coffee maker) from my bed to my couch.

My wifes commute is much worse about 200 feet (including a stop at the coffee maker) including a flight of stairs, from the bed to the office downstairs.

I like my commute for:

-Being 20-30 minutes. Even with bad traffic I am only doing 30 min.

-I spend time with my son, who I drop off at daycare each day, having a toddler is fun when you get to point out cars to him and he starts to recognize them

-I get to see a guy who dailies an Ariel Atom 500. I see him on nice mornings when it isn’t cold here in Atlanta (Gwinnett Co)

-The time between dropping off my son and getting to the office. I can open the sunroof, drop the windows and turn up the music.

-My drive back home is easy too, my wife picks up our son so as long as I leave right on the dot of 5pm, I get ahead of the rush hour wave on 316.

-I almost always see an C63 AMG Black Edition each day. The owner lives right around the corner from me and we drive along rather spiritedly, as he reigns in his mighty stonker of an engine while I wind out the turbo in mine and we part ways with a wave. Never met the gent, but we have a rolling friendship I guess.

I like the part where I get to drive.

I like how I’m usually the only Jag on my commute, and always the only X308.

I like how I’m so experienced taking the Ben Franklin into New Jersey that I can come off of the descent into a sharp curve without once touching my brakes, while almost everyone else comes to an almost dead stop when they hit the curve.

I like how some mornings I pass the same PT Cruiser with a rear window decal of Han and Chewie in the Millenium Falcon.

And most of all, after years of dealing with public transportation, I like having my own little mobile fortress of solitude that separates me from ever other commuter.

-It’s shot, like my car is just getting warmed up when I get to work short.

-The last mile of road up to my house is ice and snow covered with some tricky corners so I can engage drift mode every night while driving home.

-I park my car in a garage when I get home so it’s like tucking it in at night.

It’s short <15 minutes.

5-7 miles of highway where everyone is doing 80-90.

Super long entrance ramp to that highway.

I see the same few “enthusiasts” on the road most days, and I usually see something Italian or otherwise priced to the stratosphere twice per week or more.

Work is close enough that I can go home for lunch and hang out with my dog for a few minutes.

my ‘comuute’ really depends on which site i’m working at. if i’m downtown, i get to hit some AWESOME twistys and some on ramps on the way there. I’ve i’m working markham, its a 10 minute jaunt. keswick, i get to cruiser through the countryside for about 40 minutes to start my day off.

if i do hamilton, I get to run DVP and gardiner with NO traffic. which is AMAZING.

McCommutes:

1990-1995: 5 minutes

1995-2005: 10 minutes

2006-2009: 30 minutes

2009-present: 60 min by car+subway, or 30 min by motorbike

Time is all that matters to me. Whether it’s a nice drive or not, it all becomes routine. If I had to pick one I hated, it would probably be the car+subway. Not because it takes the most time, but because it costs me $15 a day to park/ride.

Short in the morning.

Irritating enough in the evening to give me enough energy to jog, and let out the irritation. By then traffic is awful enough (average speed seldom tops 15 mph) that the car fully warms up too.

My commute is around 10 minutes, depending on how traffic lights work for me. Pros: short commute which is typically pretty in nice weather; Cons: getting stuck behind really slow drivers, highest speed limit is 60km/h, the drive isn’t even really long enough for my car to fully warm up on really cold winter days.

I like my commute because it’s close to home, 15 minutes in normal traffic and sometimes even less. I usually come into work at 10 and leave after 6 so I miss rush hour. I have about 4-5 different routes I can take in the event of an accident, or if I need to stop at the bank, grocery store, etc. I also have a scenic long route available through the nearby national park. I always have parking at work and I don’t have to pay. It’s pretty much ideal except my commuter car is a Civic Si which can be rough.

My commute is nearly an hour, only because of dropping off my 2- and 4-year-olds on opposite ends of town, and then getting to work.

I like that I can vary the route somewhat. I like that I can stop and do simple errands along the way if needed, including a good coffee shop in the morning, the grocery store, and a lumberyard/hardware store as needed. This saves me from making separate trips to handle simple errands.

I like that “traffic” is when there’s one slow car on the 4-5 mile section of actual fun road I get to drive on, and I’m forced to go under the speed limit, no passing zones to speak of.

Most of the time I like having my kids in the car with me... picking them up is usually the best part of my day.

And this summer, we’ll have someone with the kids at home, so I’ll get to cut my commute down to a direct shot to work which takes about 8 minutes without all the dropoffs... AND I can drive my ‘61 Ford because no kids. Or my bike!

My commute is about 20 minutes or so depending on traffic. The best part is a long narrow bridge I go across every day. It is mostly flat and straight. I may have gunned it a few times with the windows down to listen to my car purr.

Though the part I like the best...is the view.

Sometimes we spend too much time ignoring what is around us and don’t appreciate what we have. I’ve seen dolphins playing, pelicans flying along side me, flocks of birds, occasional large boats and just the nice open water of the Tampa Bay area.

I enjoy that...and am disappointed if I see other drivers on their phones not enjoying what is around them.

It’s short. If it’s really cold like today my car is barely defrosted by the time I get there

I have a multitude of different little side roads to take to avoid traffic.

In the summer I can mountainbike to work fairly easy and only be on the road for a mile or so

I can take the free bus if the car is under the knife or I just don’t feel like driving

Takes about 30 minutes, which in these parts is pretty great…especially for driving about 15 miles. About 5 miles on highway around 45mph, so not too bad and the rest on surface streets. I drive by a couple of dealerships –especially loving the brand new Volvos on display these days. Outside of that also drive by a Toyota dealership that in addition to all the brand new tacos also had a beautiful red 80s 4Runner parked in the front of the lot..this was a few weeks ago though and I haven’t seen it since.

Also drive by a Hyundai dealership with an overflow lot across the street…and there are 3 old Infinitis parked in a corner. Maybe someone who works there owns them? All white, all pristine – a 1 st gen Q45, G20, and am M30 convertible. Really want to snap a picture sometime and learn the story of these 3 cars…

I also try to spend my commute usually listening to an audiobook in the mornings (currently – All the light we cannot see) and usually Pandora in the evenings for some tunes after work (lately been alternating between 80s pop/new wave and 90s hip hop).

p.s. - for the past week we’ve been snowed in and I’ve had to work from home, so technically my commute starts and ends in my pajamas these days which has been pretty awesome too.

Park city but I’m right on the outskirts of where the bus goes. It used to be every hour and was a huge pain in the ass as far as getting to work on time or back home without spending an hour or so on each end. They recently upped the frequency though so I need to start using it more

There isn’t a lot I like about my commute. I drive down a main road with heavy traffic for 5-10mins, then wait on an on-ramp for a bridge that’s a huge bottleneck all day and that wait plus the crossing is usually another 10-15mins, then my workplace is about a minute from the other end of the bridge. I guess the only nice part is the view from the bridge. I’m starting a new job on Friday that will be a longer drive, but no bridges will be involved so I’m pretty pleased about it.
