Maybe he can’t run? I’m faster and have better endurance than my fiancée but a current knee issue keeps me from running more than a mile before my knee feels like it’s going to tear itself apart.

I’m guessing it’s a security thing. Phone sends request to tesla servers and then to car once verified. If Bluetooth only, someone could just make some sort of brute force device until the right security code is found. I’m no tech guy so I’m mostly just guessing

Should be entirely possible to do it so that password strength is largely irrelevant (or without a password). Basically you’d want the device to supply the entropy for the key rather than (or in addition to) the user.

I mean, even the buy-here-pay-here ignition interlocks have an emergency code so you can start the car 3-4 times when you’re out of signal range if it thinks you haven’t paid your bill.

it doesn’t do the real job of a key, that’s what’s wrong. Sure it operated as designed, but all of this stupidity wouldn’t matter if he stuck a key into the car and turned it.

I once saw a Ford dealer set up a display at my old ad agency with 5 new cars hoping we’d buy what we were selling.
He set the keyfob in the Fiesta’s cup holder (one of the first keyfobbed/push button start Fiesta’s mind you and I’m sure this has been handled by now) and then the door somehow got locked.
The keyfob was at JUST THE RIGHT angle that he couldn’t get it to unlock. they were even shaking the car to get it closer to a door to try and unlock by proximity.
Ended up having to call for “Ford Roadside Assistance”.
I almost fell over laughing when a Dodge Dakota pulled up, at that point it was too much.
