While most of you are dealing with snow and cold and tire chains, we have this to look forward to in Florida.

When we don’t get a lot of rain and the temperatures are just a tad cooler, the gators go on the hunt for sunshine and a watery home. This fella is 14 to 16 feet long and gives no fucks. None whatsoever.

Here’s a picture of him from Flickr.

When you’re sick of the snow, pay us a visit and hang with our monsters.

Florida is basically America’s Australia. You both need to take the hint and realize that if nature wanted you there, it wouldn’t keep trying to murder you.

Alligators are my favorite animal.

I’m on vacation in FL. I was at that preserve Sunday. I saw a few big ones, but not that guy. I’ve also seen two in a neighborhood, just sunning next to a fire pond.

They mostly just lay around.

Also of note, the gators are supposed to be in ‘alligator alley’. That video is not from the alley, as it looks like this :

I lived in Florida long enough to be able to spot them in the water on Alligator Alley while driving by at 90 mph (because who goes 70 on that road?). It’s a pretty distinctive set of bumps that stick out of the water and look like a log if you don’t know what you’re looking at. People claim that they never see them there, but they just don’t know what they’re looking for. If you do, you’ll spot one every few hundred feet.

I love seeing all of the reactions from people who have been fortunate to have never lived in Florida. My reaction’s more along the lines of a muted matter-of-fact “yep, that’s a big one.”

Yep, that’s another big one

We used to live in the general region. It was a relief when we moved away from the house with the creek in the back yard and both our toddlers, the dog, and the cat were all still intact

And worse criminals at that. The majority of criminals shipped to Australia from England were folks that couldn’t pay their debts. Not exactly the sort of violent criminals people think of. Florida criminals on the other hand.....

Unless you travel to the swampier areas, spotting gators in Louisiana can be tricky. They usually don’t wander around.

My favorite gator-spotting location is Brazos Bend State Park in Texas. Over there, they have warning signs about the presence of gators in the park and to keep your animals leashed. Despite the warnings, it’s pretty common for someone to lose a dog to a gator. Their gators are fearless.
