It was made by high school students, one of which is actually not Japanese, but Sri Lankan who speaks fluent English. I felt terrible as I tried to avoid telling him what I thought about this poor abuse of a car. I’m going to Hell, aren’t I?

I think it was a Lexus. There was a similar abuse of a Supra at the Toyota Automotive College (the same college, but different group, that produced that Starlet I loved so much). Worst was the abuse by a third technical high school of a Civic Ferio. It was turned into something that was like a Plymouth Superbird? I didn’t even take a picture of it.
I’m just not mean enough to make fun of these kids on the internet, especially given all they shitty things people have said about me. They’re students, they’re learning, and they can probably do better than I can, anyhow.

It’s ugly, yeah. But frankly the workmanship is beyond what I was capable of in high school and I know most of us, myself included, committed egregious crimes against taste back then. I respect them for the drive and skill displayed, if not for their eye for design.

In fairness, they took on a much harder task than the Starlet guys. A scratch built radical body kit is way more difficult to get right than riffing on an established style (though granted the Starlet guys nailed that).
Admittedly, given they clearly had nobody with good industrial design skills on their team, they should perhaps have steered clear of radical, but if you don’t try you won’t learn. Now they know ID is hard
How was the build quality? Shutlines don’t look great from the photo.

I’m planning to write about it. Honestly, it’s what I hate about car shows the most. A significant amount of traffic, and hence the people getting in my way while I’m trying to, you know, do my job, are these guys CLEARLY zooming their lenses onto only the girls. I know, because I can see their view screens.

Counterpoint: it IS bad, of course, but if it’s a truly original design and build mod by high schoolers imo it’s really good.
KC has frequent unscripted contact with high schoolers, of course; but I’ve recently been exposed quite a bit to similar and based on my experience with them, this effort deserves lots of praise actually.

Wait, you live in Japan? You haven’t stopped asking why yet? You go through various phases of living there, you know you are confused at first, then you think you get it, then ten years later you realise you may actually know nothing!
