“Perfect Transmission”

Kinja'd!!!

Automatic transmissions are objectively better for trucks (Offroading and towing specifically.)

Only thing is the design is dated. The third generation Navara has been out for three years and is pretty slick, yet the US is stuck with the same basic design it’s had since 2004.

I agree they are, but being 2wd I would never see off roading. I maybe tow something once a year.

I really like the dated design. The 3rd gen Navara is too bloated compared to the old one.

I’ve been toying with the idea of replacing my ‘02 Xterra SE/SC with a 2016 Frontier PRO-4X. But I don’t think I can bring myself to drop $40k on a midsized truck. Also, I don’t think it has the same fun factor as my Xterra.

This, in black, with a stick, and the 3.3L Supercharged V6 and I am SOLD.

No, you see my post was a retort to yours implying the same thing. Except from the correct perspective: MINE!

No. That 3.3L SC-V6 was such trash. No discernable upside to the added complication of the blower. Nissan screwed up and should have just put the 3.5L from the QX4 and Pathfinder into the Frontier rather than mess with the SC.

Also realized too dealers will discount them heavily since Frontiers are such a hard sell. The Nissan dealer I bought my Juke from the owner also owns the Toyota dealer across the street from the Nissan dealer. He was telling me the only way they can sell a Frontier is to really discount it. They can sell Tacomas at sticker +market adjustment all day, but not the Frontier. There has been a 2016 King Cab SV V6 4wd sitting on the lot for 2.5 months now.

These are surprisingly good to drive too. I mean it’s still a truck, but they have decent pep and the transmission isn’t too bad to operate. The reverse lockout is a bit odd - you need to push the whole stick down to get into R, which is down next to 6th. Those seats are more comfortable than they look too. If I was going to get a used mid-size pickup, I’d probably get the Ford, but these are a close second. Tacomas are too expensive (yes I realize that it makes more sense long term), the Ridgeline isn’t my thing, and the GM triplets aren’t that great.

I love mine! Put a reduction pulley on the blower, upped the boost from 5psi to 12psi and burnouts all day. It’s actually ridiculous fun. Mine’s pushing 350,000kms and the only two issues it’s had are the distributor failing at 275,000kms and the supercharger needing new bearings at 310,000kms.

I had one in highschool (2007 V6 RWD). So I’m not blind about Frontiers. the 4L V6 was monster, being RWD with an empty box made it do epic burn outs. The only difference was it had the 5spd auto.

The perfect truck was Ford Ranger until Ford decided to be really stupid and stop selling them here.

NO. I looked at one 3 years ago, but slab of granite was more comfortable then the drivers seat in the ranger, the Frontier also drives much nicer then a Ranger.

I would much rather have a manual for towing and offroading. If you’re a competent with a clutch, a manual is better for both. An automatic is only better if you’re prone to burning up clutches.

I bit dated in just about every way though. Maybe good for a second hand if the price is low enough.

Also, there are full size F150 4x4s that get better mpg than this truck does.

False. Too much cab, not enough driven wheels, bed too small, too much wheelbase. Try again.

Thats the key, they are great used deals. New I think you pay a but much for it, but they discounted lots since they are such hard sells. I don’t buy a truck & worry about fuel consumption. If I did I buy car worrying about fuel consumption, I get a Yaris or Fit.

I made do with 2wd when I had mine, and it did great. Winter tires, and 200lbs of sand in the box (two 50lb bags over each rear wheel).

I had an automatic in my 2007 V6 RWD. The 5spd auto felt like sledge hammer fell at low rpm shifts.

If your truck doesn’t need to go places where 2wd’s can’t, you’re using it wrong.

I bought it off my dads company, it was used for going to job sites. It was a high km ex-work truck. Bought it in 2012 (2007 model year), with 270,000kms.

Fuel consumption is important for most situations, which is why Ford has invested so much in aluminum and turbos, start stop, etc.

My six-seat 5,000 pound F150 gets me better mileage than my old BMW E46s sedan and is only 2 mpg lower than my previous commuter car, a VW CC 2.0T on my daily commute. The efficiency was so good in fact, I was able to get rid of two vehicles, my old F150 & my daily driver VW and replace it with a new F150.

Going from 14 mpg on my last F150 to 23.5 mpg is a big deal if your truck is a daily driver. However, its purely used for “truck” duties on the weekends, then I agree mpg doesn’t really matter for a low use vehicle.

The torque converter’s torque multiplication helps with getting a trailer off the line, though (so you don’t need as short gears on the bottom end), and it makes rock crawling smoother without having to slip the clutch.

I mean, I despise conventional automatics in general (and my preferred automatic transmission type, the power split device, has issues in heavy load applications at least in electric form (there are hydraulic power split devices in tractors, though)), but they do have their uses.
