Today I became a victim of my own inelegance.

Kinja'd!!!

To cut a short story short, I went ice skating today for my little sister’s birthday, and took some skin off of my wrist/palm when my feet parted ways and my knees decided to get to know each other better. Those little teeth dont h*ck around. It was my first time skating, and I’ve concluded that humans weren’t designed to strap metal blades to their feet and slip around on a frozen lake.

There was also this awesome older guy there who was the most graceful skater I’ve ever seen. He had to have been in his 60s, and he was skating backwards, on one leg, you name it. It’s a little embarrassing to be outskated by 5-year-olds and the elderly.

I went ice skating once. That was over 35 years ago and I have no desire to ever do it again. I once bought some roller blades and it was just like ice skating, although with less protection and more things to crash into and injure myself on. I sold them to a co-worker for 80% less than I paid for them and was happy to see them go.

I had fun, but the motions to actually move yourself and staying upright weren’t my strong suits.

I went skating when I was a kid, and, despite being Canadian, I am not very good at it....

Yeah, balancing on a thin row of support, whether it be blades or a row of wheels, is a bit off a challenge. I was much better with conventional roller skates because it was much easier to stay balanced.

I’ve done it a few times. I enjoyed it. It was simple and mellow. Just keep weight on the skate that is on the ground, and use the other to push off. Then lean to turn. I wish we had canals so I could travel on them. A circle is boring.

This is why figure skates are not for beginners. The first time I tried ice cpskating I wphad figure skates, and I hated it. About 5 years later some one gave me a pair of hockey skates and completely different thing. Besides not having the stupid “breaks” in the front, you have way more support for your ankles.

Hockey skates or those weird leather booties with blades on the bottom?

I just spent many hours at the rink over the weekend. My 7 year old is on his third year of ice hockey, 4th year of skating. Those kids are crazy good skaters! I’m sure I’d kill myself on figure skates.

Skating is a thousand different kinds of awesome. That said, I can’t understand how people can skate in figure skates. I’d be digging in my heels and tripping on the picks 24/7. Hockey skates ftw.

And btw were they your skates, borrowed, rental... ? If your feet parted ways that doesn’t sound like your fault. That sounds like dull/poorly sharpened blades. Losing balance and falling forwards or backwards would be down to lack of experience, but doing the splits is entirely different... On that note I played hockey on a pair of borrowed skates once. The owner wasn’t really a skater, hadn’t used them for ages and they felt like they’d been used on concrete. Never again. Every time the puck changed direction I went down. It was hard enough to get enough bite to accelerate. Stops, sharp turns and transitions? Forget it.

EDIT: Am I seriously the only skater on here? With at least one Canadian no less. I am disappoint.

2nd EDIT: Found one.

I love skating, but you reminded me of a story...

It took me a long time to get the hang of stopping properly, even though I could skate *fairly* well. Anyway, I sometimes played roller hockey with a friend who was a much better skater. I used to laugh my ass off when he’d forget we was on rubber instead of steel and go cab over tea kettle because he tried stopping like he was on ice.

...cue the music a few years later when I tried a pair of roller skates again... after stopping had become second nature.

Play hockey. Ain’t no circle skating in hockey. :)

On a related note, I think Toronto should put coils under the lakeshore bike trail. People roller skate it in summer, why should they have all the fun?

I remember when I was about 11 or 12 I asked for ice skating lessons. My goal was to play hockey (I had just discovered the Red Wings that year.) Yeah, no, notgonnahappen. I don’t have the physical coordination. I think I got discouraged after a few weeks when 5 year olds were skating circles around me, and gave up shortly after.
