I find it stupid that it took them this long to do that.
To me it’s simple, if you don’t pay your fines, you shouldn’t be allowed to renew your licence.

I can’t even start to understand how someone can have a unpaired ticket, let alone one from 30 years ago.
I never had a ticket that wasn’t paid in 30 days or less.

I have an unpaid parking ticket in Philadelphia. I happened to get it about a month before moving to a new job in New York. Considering how notoriously awful parking enforcement is in Philadelphia, and the only thing they could do was prohibit me from ever registering a car in Pennsylvania, I was very happy to make not paying that ticket part of my farewell to the city.
Now I work in Philadelphia again. I don’t miss street parking and neither does my wallet nor my bumper.

Sounds good, but shouldn’t moving violations be attached to driver’s license renewal? Seems like equipment violations should be the only thing standing in the way of plate renewal.
EDIT: The article seems to already suggest that.
Drivers with unpaid parking tickets or red-light tickets pinned on their vehicles already face a blockade on plate renewal, and drivers with long outstanding moving violations are likely to have had their driver’s licence suspended.

If it’s Jasper, Alberta, he should probably be fine, because out of province fines are apparently a pain in the arse to deal with (see: the city of Ottawa complaining every year). Add to the fact that it’s a 30 year old ticket , I don’t think he has much to worry about.

MB and SK have been doing this for years. But it also helps that they issue you with a court date if you don’t pay within a certain date, and then if you don’t show up in court depending on the severity of the offence or the mood the judge is in, they could issue a warrant for your arrest for failing to appear. One of my coworkers recently spent a weekend in jail because of that.

I don’t quite follow. In Ontario, if you have an unpaid moving violation, your license is suspended. If you have an unpaid parking violation, you already couldn’t renew your stickers. So exactly what fines are they trying to collect here?
