Kinja'd!!!

Ford just made the RWD equivalent of the 2012 Honda Civic. Nobody’s going to buy it, and it’s going to get an emergency re-styling for the 2019 model year, pushing off the next gen of Mustang for a couple more years. The hideously busy lower grille, the jowls, the turn signals supplied by Autozone, the weird bump in the headlights, and the out of character rear spoiler will all be gone sooner or later.

They took a great looking design, and turned it into a big stinky shit.

It needs a facelift. Not an update to the model, but actual facelift because the front looks so droopy.

Doesn’t look that different to me - is this enough to set off alarms in styling?

You know everyone says this every time a new model/refresh comes along. About half a year later, more photos surface and the car is seen in person and then everyone starts to like it.

Really I just want to see it in person. And in another color, not a huge fan of the orange. I quite like it so far though. Should be more pictures and info up tonight I believe.

Soon: Ford will release official photos and info and everyone will admit that it really isn’t as terribly awful as their first impressions led them to believe.

Later: It will go on sale and people will see it in person and realize that they got all riled up for no reason.

Even later: Ford will debut another facelift or the next generation and everyone will flip their shit again because, “OMG! They made it uglier!!1! Used Mustang prices just went up!!!”

Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

The problem here is that none of the new elements really work together.

I’d like to agree with you, but when the 2010 and 2013 refreshes of the S197 came out, they looked really great to me. I also loved the pre-facelift S550 when it broke cover. The problem with this facelift is that none of the elements are particularly bad per se, but they just don’t work together. The main grille and jowls have a very vertical look while the lower grille and indicators have a very horizontal look. Even cars that are completely overstyled, like the Juke and the Aztek, have a cohesive visual direction to their front ends (horizontal for the Juke, vertical for the Aztek). The front end on this thing is just lost and disproportionate.

I wish this were the case, but this is one of the few cases where the facelift really is terrible. Nothing really lines up, and there are too many clashing elements on that front end. I usually reserve judgement on cars until actual real-world photos are released, but this is just too messy for me to do that. A shame considering that I really liked both S197 facelifts when they came out, and I liked the S550 when it came out.

I’d need to walk around one ... some don’t photograph well but are OK in the metal.

The new rear fascia element is pretty great, but none of the elements on the front fascia come close to lining up with other front fascia elements. It’s really hard to hide that in a car.

I think it looks good. Took a nice design and only added / changed a few things. Peoples knee jerk reactions are funny.

The indicators have no real reason to be that large, and there’s so much lower grille that’s just blanked off with frilly lines giving the blanking panels “character.” The jowls aren’t the most congruent things but they could be worse, and the headlights are still a bit iffy. The elements aren’t bad by themselves, but they don’t work really well together on any car.
