Black door handles on a car usually mean the cheapest trim level.

because hipsters are into irony like blacking out lights making them useless or emphasizing parts of a car with odd colors to make an incoherent mess is ironic and hip.

That’s silly. When I bought my Taco, the body colored bits were part of what I liked about it vs the other models. Yes, I’m superficial.

Hipsters ride fixies or take the bus or drive BMW 2002s. They sure as heck don’t drive Neons. No, this is the modern day ricer. They always have to have something new to show off at their weekly car meets in the grocery store parking lot, so they randomly plasti-dip things and constantly trade wheels, even if they don’t fit. Their mantra is “Why save for tomorrow what you could spend today?”

It’s more about looking different than looking good. These guys want to “customize” their car in some way, but they don’t feel ready to take on real bodywork, or wrenching for that matter. They go after these parts that are small and easy to do, and try to make them look “anything but stock”, and knowledge of what other trim levels look like is not a prerequisite.

I’m more offended by the smoked/tined tails.

I can’t stand those.

I don’t think the type of people doing that are hipsters. I see blacking out taillights more in the wannabe gangster crowd.

This is a bit tangential to your post, but I don’t get the whole black plastic handles being for lower trims. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just produce them one way? It’s the same with LED headlights and drum brakes, too. Why not just make one iteration of a part? It wouldn’t save them millions, but still. I have a feeling it’s all just for a faux sense of aspirationalism.

It’s definitely for aspirationalism, people pay more for nicer things, and it would be silly for the manufactures not to cater to that, much like how people pay more for leather seats. Sure it would save them a bunch of money if they made every seat the same, and with cloth, but people pay more for leather, just like colored or chrome (gross) door handles, LED lights, etc.

As for the manufacturing costs the handles are most likely injection molded, and the manufacturers probably have a lot of molds. Because of this they can run different batches in either A. certain colors, which likely isn’t much more expensive because of the quantities they run, or more likely B. many many black handles which end up getting painted. I don’t know how everyone does it, but usually if you gouge a plastic part it’s black underneath because it’s easier to paint plastic than it is to mold it in a consistent color, especially when it comes to unique colors.

To get a finish that will look good painted it needs a whole lot more work to the mold. The unpainted black handles generally have a textured finish that is cheaper to produce than a handle that is smooth enough to be painted. There may also be extra post mold steps to ensure that the handles will be able to hold paint where the black handles will be ready to go as soon as they come out of the mold.

TL;DR - It is cheaper to put black plastic handles on the low end cars than to make painted handles for all trim levels.
