More like, I want them to die. One less idiot on the road. Though honestly anyone with their lights of in rain or fog can go fuck themselves with a sandpaper dildo. I had to yell at my friend the other day for doing it.

YASSSSSS!!!!!! I hate that SO MUCH!!! Like, you assholes! The lights aren’t so that you can see, it’s so that others see you !

(Ask me if I have strong feelings on this. Heh).

And I say this as a person with a tiny silver car myself. I pop those lights on anytime visibility is limited at all.

Add to that list people who don’t turn on their lights at dusk/dawn. Y’all! Do you not get how the physics of light work during those two times of day? And how the human eye works? They combine to mean less precise edge perception and less color contrast, which means everything is harder to see! Turn on your lights!

Damn straight, that behavior seems absolutely endemic in Texas.

When every modern car has DRL, I’m totally confused as to why people ever have them off in the first place. Like, why are you turning off this safety feature.

It is definitely most galling in rain/fog (meanwhile, so many people who leave fog lights on all the time, even when the conditions don’t require it).

Not every modern car has DRLs. My 2002 Cavalier had DRLs most likely because it was built in Canada, where they’ve been required since 1989. They’re not federally required in the US. My 2013 Fiesta, for instance, doesn’t have them.

because the fog lights look cool bro.

Hmm, I’m surprised. Even if not equipped I’d think they’d just have the DRL mode turn on the headlights and call it good, but I guess not.

Yup, as a fellow silver car driver anytime the sky matches my paint, lights go up.

I especially hate it during that transition period at night when there are still holdouts who don’t have their lights on, I end up mostly looking for headlights and miss them easily.

I don’t have DRLs either. I just have my full headlights turned on all the time.

(also noted, thank god for tech that turns them off when the car is off, because I had about a million dead batteries as a teenager.)

Tanginiently, people need to realize that DRLs aren’t your main headlights

To be fair, I don’t really assume most people out there know the physics of light.

Mine are, but yeah generally not the case (and I know current European standards require they be separate). And yeah in some configurations, it can definitely be dangerous to confuse the two. Really seems like it shouldn’t be challenging to have the car automatically handle switching between DRL and headlights, especially given how many people mess it up.

Even worse is at night in the rain! My car has auto dimming mirrors so at night I don’t get hit with glare, but it makes the mirrors dark enough that if a car came up quickly with no lights I wouldn’t see them at all.

I see this often with new Honda accords, Dodge chargers and Nissan Rogues the most. Somehow they are able to run their DRLs exclusively and at full brightness even at night. The Honda/Charger drivers usually do it because it looks cooler (it’s cool I’ll give them that, they have nice DRLs).

You don’t have to know the actual physics of it. It’s common sense. At dusk/dawn, things are a lot harder to see, even for someone with good vision. You don’t have to understand the scientific “why” behind that to experience firsthand the truth of it.
