I hit a gnarly one getting on the freeway. Enough to where I was surprised my alignment wasn’t all out of whack.
Things got a little weird five minutes later. The whole tire tread ripped clean off at freeway speeds, in the fast lane.
Sitting here with the CHP waiting for a tow. Didn’t get a scratch on me or the car. The brown will wash out.
I’m pretty sure autocross and track days just saved my ass.

Sumimotos. I inspected them five times yesterday. Looked like new. Couldn’t have more than 10k on them. First time with the brand. If you’d asked yesterday I’d have told you how much I liked them.

If there indeed is no damage to that lovely vehicle, you are very lucky! This is what happened to my old Mazda after a tire tread let go (pic taken after it was towed and the semi-flat spare put on).
Everybody told me that I was lucky that it was a front tire, as something similar in the back would have spun me out????? I don’t know what to make of that, but a rear tire letting go this spectacular without damage that is instantly visible sounds like you won the lottery today.

10k on the rear of a 996 and they were probably on their downward slope.
i wonder if they engineered the tread for wear/durability--leading to the “like new” appearance—but let the sidewall engineering lag, hence the sheering failure.

I lost the brakes when I lost the tire. There’s no brake fluid spilled so I’m guessing it might have been ABS or stability control overriding me. Regardless, I’d have to get up to 70mph to merge after just having to lock the emergency brake to stop moments before. No thank you.

80/580 near north Berkey yesterday (Monday) afternoon? I passed your car on the way up to Tahoe. Remember seeing the blue 996 with the CHP car behind it and being surprised that they’re stopped on the left side shoulder, so I assumed it was a breakdown of some sort.
Couldn’t see the blown out tire, even from the left lane. Hope it all gets sorted out.

Yeah that was me. Interesting spot to be stranded. The traffic got heavy on going the other direction and one guy went by slowly enough that he asked if I was considering selling the car. Another asked me how it happened as they could see the lack of tire. Strangely a lot of chit chat for the side of a freeway.
