Also a reminder that whether you’re 16 or 96, most states don’t require you to have anything more than the joke that is the normal American driver’s license to operate this colossus.

14 year olds can drive class A motorhomes here, as long as they have a learner’s permit and the passenger has a regular licence and is above the age of 18. I’m not even joking.

Yup, same here. Only for a 14 y/o it would probably be a school permit.

I suppose it depends on the distance you’re traveling, but at what point does fuel cost > hotel room?

That’s sort of missing the point. The $1-2 million asking price for many of these vehicles would buy you plenty of nights in some perfectly lovely hotels.

D’oh. Missed that entirely. Assume it was inherited? Won on a gameshow? Found in a field?

i’ve driven across the country 5 times or so, and up/down it about 6 or 7 times—for pleasure, for business, for friends, for whatever. have stayed in the sketchiest (and fanciest) h/motels, eaten some of the most disgusting (and tastiest) meals, and pooped in some of the scariest, barely lit, cockroach and flying insect infested latrines...

not once did i ever feel like i would have preferred being in one of these things.

It has more than two axles, so you need a better license here.

There are plenty that size with only two axles for that exact reason.

You only need upgraded licenses here if it has air brakes, other than that you can drive whatever you want

Drove a large RV from Charlotte to Carolina Motorsports Park for the last LeMons race. Waze took me on winding back roads. Narrow roads. It was the most taxing driving I did all weekend.

There should be an option to tell Waze that you are driving some sort of large or cumbersome vehicle that is poorly suited to certain types of roads. If it can figure out how to avoid potholes, it can come up with a suitable route for a big vehicle.

I’m shocked there doesn’t seem to be a nav app designed for large vehicles/trucks/trailers. Something that factors in bridge heights, restricted roads, etc.

Yup. Then I could use it as well, to avoid bigger vehicles!

The Navigon app used to have an add-on for trucks. But maybe only for IOS, not Android (not using iOS anymore). And then there is Truckfly app (not tested).

My dad has a huge army tent with a stove and that was ok. After being in the Marines and climbing for so many years, I am kind of over sleeping in some shit conditions myself. I took my wife to Australia and we went all over the outback in some remote places camping, we had a reservation for a camping area near Uluru and after one night I said, why are we not in the hotel they built out here? So there was a room and we went, then had an amazing time at Uluru in a rare pouring rain. Also I thought air brakes is another class license?

Air brakes are another class license, but all but a few states make exceptions for personal motorhomes.
