Well it’s officially official. Bottas to Mercedes AMG. What are your thoughts on it?

Personally I’m optimistic about it. First off, he’s not as ego-driven as Nico was and he’s a good enough driver to make podium in a Williams, so I’m interested to see what he can do in one of the Silver Arrows. I would’ve loved to see Verstappen get the seat, but imagine how much more drama we would’ve gotten (is that really a bad thing though?). Riccardo would’ve been my second choice because it’s impossible to hate the man. Like I said though, I‘m optimistic about choosing Bottas. Just happy they didn’t go with Wehrlein or Magnussen.

Thoughts?

I’m expecting him to be Merc’s Mark Webber: a good No. 2 driver who’s fast enough to finish in the top 5 on a regular basis but not quick enough to challenge the golden boy (in this case Lewis) of the team. Even if it’s a bit of a conservative pick by Mercedes it’s a smart one, and as a Bottas fan I’m hoping he makes the most of it.

I am eager to see what Bottas can do compared to Lewis. Should be interesting is Bottas starts winning and Lewis doesn’t.

Also, I’m both happy and sad to see Massa back. Hopefully it will be worth it for him and for Williams. Now, we all know that the Williams cars were probably the fastest (in a straight line) cars on the grid. If they can just carry some more speed and grip through the corners...

Fuck it. I’ll go out on a limb right now... Massa wins the championship this year.

I’m excited to see what Bottas can do in a top tier car. Hopefully he puts up a strong fight with Hamilton, since the Mercedes battle was the main story all last year.

Solid choice. Not that I know much or follow at all really.

To be honest I’d be curious to see how Lewis would do outside of a Mercedes car. Would he still be #blessed?

Of the available drivers, I think he was the best bet. Red Bull would be foolish to let either Max or Daniel go, so I never even considered them as options. The names of greats like Vettel and Alonso were always going to come up, but I never even considered them as options, either.

Also, a one-year deal is just fine - if he performs, re-sign him and I’m confident it’ll still be cheaper than trying to buy a highly rated driver away from their current teams. If he doesn’t, well... I think good contracts are expiring next year, like Vettel. I would love to see Vettel join Mercedes-AMG in 2018 and just cause a team implosion greater than Hamilton/Alonso or Senna/Prost.

If the Mercedes is the leading car again in 2017, it’ll be up to Bottas to show he can throw down in equal machinery, otherwise it’s back to the midfield for 2018. Is he going to be a Hakkinen? Or is he going to be a Kovalainen?
