Football, not soccer (you Europeans came up with the name soccer so stop trying to say it’s called football, in fact it was called soccer before it was ever called football).

Best thing I read after the Packer win last night was

Packers to Football Gods: Can we get two 50 yard field goals in the last two minutes?

Football Gods: Sure! Here, take three!

Vikings to Football Gods: Can we-

Football Gods: NO!

Amazing game though between the Packers and the Cowboys. GO PACK GO!

Here are some Packer-mobiles for your time

“in fact it was called soccer before it was ever called football”

Why do you people keep saying this? Soccer appeared 200 years ago where as football is well over 1000 years old. I mean the bloody sport was breifly banned 700 years ago so people would take up archery. Also that period of time is what is responsible for the V sign.

“Football is well over 1000 years old” - that football doesn’t exist today, what ever sport that was lead to American football, soccer, rugby, etc. And all are descendants of that game.

The modern game of soccer was called just that until sometime in the 19th century I think. Then for whatever reason the British decided they didn’t like the Americans appropriating their sport and calling it soccer too, so they started calling it football.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s my understanding of the evolution of the sport.

I’ll add that I know soccer is a shorthand way of the saying the official name Association Football...so while it is called football from the beginning, soccer was the common name used for it for a long while.

The thing is that game from 1000 years ago would still recognisable as football today but the interesting stuff happened 200 years ago. As you said there were many versions of football and in the 19th century there was an attempt to organise it all and standardise the rules and as a result Association Football was born.

The thing is that Association Football isn’t exactly snappy so a rebrand was in order. This is where Soccer came from as is was slang for association. It didn’t take though because it was slang among the upper classes and needless to say the people were too keen on the upper classes taking control of the everyman’s game. So everyone just continued saying football like they had the past 1000 years. Funny thing is that many upper class British people still refer to the game as Soccer.

See that was the problem, it wasn’t common. It tried to be but it failed because you know class warfare and all that.

Crazy awesome game. considering the amazing stuff the cowboys have done, it could have gone either way. and thats what you want in a game. Not none of the lopsisded 59-5 games like college (no offense but I can’t watch players that aren’t 100% decided on football play)
