If you had to buy an offroad vehicle that would never see pavement, What would you buy?

And I mean “Never see pavement”. After my wife started a discussion about the state of the JEEP brand, I began wondering what my answer to this question would be. The vehicle has to remain in stock form (not one modification). It has to be no older than 2016. I would say a Range Rover, but if it breaks... It can not touch pavement. It doesn’t matter how good the warranty is, you can’t use it.

I think I’d choose a Rubicon Wrangler, but I’m not sure FCA is the right answer. Any ideas????

Toyota 4Runner Trail is the obvious answer.

Or Land Cruiser.

Maybe a stock Raptor. I wouldn’t trust a Hennessey product for longevity.

Land Rover. Because it’s 2017 and the least we can do is offroad like civilized gentlemen/women. Not WW2 GIs in a Jeep.

I love Toyota, and their trucks are the greatest, but it won’t be my answer.

Instead, I’ll say an early 80s diesel G-wagon convertible. Or one of the cute lil Suzukis (Samurai, Sidekick/Vitara/Tracker)

I also like the Freelander convertible more than I should. A yellow SE3 manual is something I think of sometimes

When I was in Canyonlands NP maze district I talked to the ranger there about their wranglers they use to patrol roads like these

and get to and from the station which is 3 hours on a dirt road like this

Kinja'd!!!

And then another hour to the nearest “town”. This is about as close to you hypothetical as is possible in the US.

They have wrangler rubicons and I asked how she liked them, she said they are great but they get traded in at 30,000 miles because they are trashed, everything is loose and falling apart. Me? Im taking a brand new Land Cruiser. Either a 200 series or a Prado (gx460/4runner)

Well, assuming I remain in N.W. Ohio, and continue my present occupation, but only have to drive on unpaved roadways, I’m thinking this Subie could handle my needs quite well. I’m not rock hopping anywhere around here anyways, with the worst being a very rutted rural roadway. That, and if I grow a beard, wear some flannel shirts and ditch my contacts for glasses, I could pass for some 30ish Hipster. ;)

It may not be exciting, but it’ll keep being boring forever without being difficult to live with. It’s part of the reason I like base models. It may not be fancy, but just about everything that was working when it left the factory will be working thirty years later. I’ve seen too many power windows and power lock systems fail to have any faith in them. Sadly I don’t think you can get the Colorado without either.

The correct answer is a Series Land Rover. I’m partial to Series I and Series II with inset headlamps, but a Series III Stage One also makes a compelling case.

Able to be disassembled and repaired with a screwdriver and socket set (and lots of wobble extensions), dirt simple, capable, and aluminium bodywork.

EDIT: if you are going to limit to new cars, then I still submit that a new old stock Series (built entirely from new spares) is far more suited to the task of never seeing pavement than just about anything built today (since Land Rover killed the Defender)
