Is he just going to round-robin all the manufacturers?

Wait. If the current F30 is built in South Africa until the next generation is built in Mexico, will they be taxed as well? I honestly don’t see a problem with the 3 Series being built in Mexico.

This is why i was sad when ford announced it was increasing production here...whatever the reason (totally unrelated to full caving) it doesnt matter as much as it empowered him with a win...now he thinks he can bully any manufacture and manufactures a think they are going to get consideration for making changes that favor us manufacturing. Not as in good and ethical trade policy that favors manufacturing stqying put...more like a chip in the big game. One of the two things is going to happen, zomeone is going to say “this is stupid, we arent going to be bullied” or he starting handing out so many chips that his political inflation will cause them to be worthless. The 3rd less likely possability is that his promises actual produce results in terms of reducing free trade agreements or increasing tarrifs...which is still a loose scenario

I look forward to him learning that Ford of Europe exists. “They’re taking American jobs. SAD!”

The last thing we need is another Auto Pact situation. Worst comes to worst, the World Trade Organization just goes “can’t do that, that shit’s illegal” again.

So, I can kind of understand getting upset about American companies moving production out of the US. I really don’t understand getting angry at foreign companies for not building their cars in the US.

Really, I shouldn’t be trying to attach any kind of reason to the things he says. I don’t think he’s mentally capable of thoughts that complex.

I wonder what that will mean to the next generation of M cars, since all of them, with the exception of the X family that are US built, are built in Germany. Also, are Porsches/Ferraris/Bentleys/Maseratis/etc going to have that 35% tax too? Since none of those manufacters have factories in the USA?

The F30 is built in Germany, Egypt, China, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia and Thailand too, other than South Africa. Plenty of countries to bring the 3-Series to the US, for sure at least one of those will have a trading agreement with the USA.

Actually, if I’m not mistaken, only three factories produce the 3 Series for the US: Regensburg and Munich in Germany, and Rosslyn in South Africa. The other countries produce them for other international markets.

I thought a big part of Republicans was the whole idea of free business. They believe in fewer taxes and restrictions.

Trump is doing the exact opposite of that. I don’t get it.

For one, the Mexican press are using everything to make bad publicity about Trump. I did my research and discovered that he had little influence in Fords decision. The amount of ignorant people here swearing that it was specifically Trumps fault is astounding though.

You are right, but if the Mexican built 3-Series gets taxed, BMW will have plenty of factories to bring the 3-Series to the US. Because of those countries (probably Germany because EU and they are white, which is what matters to Trump) will surely have a trading agreement with the US. It will surely be much cheaper to slight retool an existing foreign factory that already produces the 3-Series to also build USDM cars than to deeply upgrade the South Carolina factory to build them.

It’s like when Trump did the same with Toyota and the Corolla, except that Toyota was moving production from it’s factory in Ontario, not the US, meaning that those jobs were never Americans in the first place.

I’ll be totally honest here. I think he’s being ridiculous. I want to hear that the 3 Series is built in Germany and Mexico for the US market. The Spartanburg plant is currently making most of the X models. It shouldn’t have to handle the additional stress of their most popular car. I voted for him because I am a conservative Republican, but even I think he’s being beyond ridiculous.

And he is completely partial and biased. No a single word from him yet from US cars built in Canada or in Europe. Actually, not a single word from cars built in Latin America and Asia. It seems like Trump is completely fine with it as long as the car isn’t built in Mexico. Hell I’m sure that when he is going to present this tax to the congress he is only going to mention Mexico.

I’m not Mexican, but I sure feel sorry for them for these next four years

Not to mention that the Greer, SC plant is churning out X3, X4, X5, and X6 models as fast as possible for the US and export markets.

Those models have SC as their main production site. For some, they are only built in SC.
