What is the best/cheap route to go? Would something like this work for heating an insulated garage to paint things over winter?

Kinja'd!!!

Is radiant type heating enough? What have you had success with in a one car garage? electric propane kerosene?

I’ve used one of those, and it worked well. I’m in Texas, so YMMV.

I also kept my door cracked for ventilation. I wouldn’t say the garage was warm, but it took the edge off.

Depends on size. I use a top hat propane.

If you are painting I’d stay away from an open flame heater.

Always ventilate and use a CO meter if possible and watch leaving it on all the time it will release humidity into the air, i.e. rusting stuff.

I kept checking Craig’s list until I found someon selling a gas furnace. Bought it for $150.00, installed $100.00 of duct work, paid a Plumber $425.00 to pull the gasoline from the basement. And my shop gets 70 if I want it to.

I was looking for an old (illegal) woodstove, that I could just through wall. But then I thought about home insurance and am looking at a big propane tank and one of these now or something like it:

I was lucky enough to have a 20A 240vac outlet in my garage when I moved in, so I bought one of these.

My garage is attached, with a bedroom above, so it never really gets cold. It’s usually about half way in between the inside/outside temp.

The first time I used it, it was probably 20F deg outside so I cranked it up in the morning to go out later. I walked into the garage with a sweatshirt on only to be hit in the face with heat.

The garage was 88 deg, 20 degrees warmer than it was inside the house.

I have not turned it up that high since.

One of those worked well when I worked on the MG in the garage over the winter. I could work in shorts in the garage with the door cracked open when the outside temp was 10-20 degrees. This was in a partially insulated 3 car garage.

electric with fan can be cheapest entry, though can get costly to run.

infared also cheap entry can be better for painting in that there is no blowing air, though mostly heat in direct view.

in my neck, kerosene is @$4 a gallon, close to propane. if running either make sure to have a CO detector. I was helping my dad and his friends then they go, why are you opening the door, “because you assholes have been drinking for the last 5 hours and I have a headache from the burner running.”

another option is to get an old oil furnace. though this will take room and be the most costly to install though maybe cheapest to run with how cheap oil is right now.

Tried to use one when hunting when the oil burning stove when out. By the time to single room cabin warmed up the CO2 level was sky high. Tried it with the door open and no luck.

woodstoves aren’t illegal. though your home insurance does go up.

Illegal uninspected woodstoves are. And insurance would laugh at you.

this was my idea as well. There is a wall shared with the gas stove in the kitchen I figure bashing a hole in the wall and tapping into the gas for the stovetop and be done but I worry about blowing myself up and finding an old furnace can be tricky and then there is the space they take up.

I estimate it to be 58 cents an hour to run a 5600 watt electric heater seem really cheap to me.

this seems like the best compromise. lots of watts and compact unit with no exploding myself.

Minor painting or car/panel painting via HVLP?

It’s not just open flame that can kill you, it’s any kind of spark.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

New EPA Standards Do Not Affect Currently - Owned Stoves. The new standards for woodstoves apply only to stoves sold in the future, not to stoves currently used in homes. Even the Heartland blog that claimed stoves are “now banned” admitted as much later in the article: “Under the EPA rules, homeowners with existing wood-burning stoves can continue to use them.” Woodstoves and heaters that do not meet the new standards may continue to be sold until December 31, 2015. what is an illegal wood stove?

In some areas, wood stoves are no longer allowed in garages. However, they are still allowed in “workshops”. Just need to name your building correctly.

I’m using it today as a matter of fact. I’m painting my lawn mower, and wanted nice warm temps to help paint dry.

I turned it up half way this time.
