The TopGear 747 (also used in Casino Royale) has a strange engine configuration. Anyone have more info?

It was modified for Casino Royale. The configuration was never actually used for anything beyond being a prop.

If you want something weird in flight, the 747 can carry a 5th engine as a pod-engine:

It’s not actually functional, but Boeing designed it as a way to transport spare engines to distant markets without needing a separate transport plane. Not sure if the feature survived in the 747-8, but I’d guess not.

The full story of this plane: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/planes/q0297.shtml

seems like they changed it just for Casino Royale, to make it a bit less 747-ish

Gotcha, thanks. I was kind of hoping it was some kind of obscure prototype, but film props are neat too.

That’s really cool, thanks. I bet that extra engine probably doesn’t help with fuel consumption, I’m guessing that’s a lot of extra drag!

Pretty sure 748s don’t have the capability. Shame. Curious what other airliners besides the 747 and L1011 have spare pod capability.
