This is for safety, right? And how are you supposed to see this coming from more than one car length away? Jeebus Crisp, this kind of thing grinds my gears.

Plenty bright to be visible from afar i’d say, they switched to the blue LED lights here in denmark and i can see them in bright daylight clearly on the entire stretch past the house and a good 2-3km away when not blocked by line of sight. A roof bar would be more visible likely, but not really an option if you want an un-marked car like this appears to be

Not all police cars pull cars over. Detectives still have lights.

It’s the line of sight that’s the problem. This thing is in traffic with mostly crossovers, SUV’s and trucks.

Seeing them in action before they work just as well as traditional lights. Most agencies do go with lights in the front and rear windscreen in my are though.

How would I know if that was an actual police officer... They are their to protect and serve, and not hide and terrorize.

“Safety”: setting up a speed trap in a 50 km/h zone that is way too wide and open to be 50. In an industrial zone. On a weekend. In broad daylight. To catch people doing 55 km/h.

I agree with this completely. If there’s a police car bearing down with lights on, I’d like a lot more time to change lanes safely than I’d get from not knowing until the car behind me moves over.

WA State Patrol has some super stealth black, dark green and dark blue Camrys. You don’t notice them until you see the lights on the dash.

I was wondering how long it would take before a PD would use Camrys. Since even the civilian Crown Vics stick out like a sore thumb.

Fucking Washington state police have been driving stealth cop cars as long as I can think of. Back in the 80's they had brown chevy celebrities. The light bar was inside the car so you couldn’t tell it was a cop until it was to late.

Ugh, and speeding is not the problem in this state! Stuff like stealth cop cars to stop speeding is a perfect demonstration that the priority is revenue and not stopping speeding. A plainly visible cop car would stop people from speeding, but nobody gets paid that way, right?

My biggest gripe is the bazillion candlepower of strobing blindness that completely destroys your night vision when you’re within a mile of them.

This is why more cops than ever are getting smoked by passing vehicles and we end up with even more laws added to the books like “Slow down, move over” to accommodate them.

Nobody ever really had an issue seeing them 30 years ago when they hit the lights, when cars were twice as wide and roads twice as narrow.

Now every square inch of their vehicle has to strobe with the intensity of the damn sun for their supposed safety, inadvertently blinding passers-by, and when officer wingnut gets clipped it’s our damn fault.

Have you never seen an undercover police vehicle before? Because believe me, when one is coming through traffic with lights and sirens on, it’s visible from plenty more than a car length away.

Yup, MT tried stealth Highway patrol (now state police) cars in the 80's. They found it increased risks to the public and to the officers, and did nothing to reduce crime. They wised up and went back to more visible police cruisers. Of course since that was in the days of the $5 wasting a non-renewable resource, it was not a money maker for the state either. It cost the state $20 to process each $5 ticket, so they lost $15 for all those extra stops a stealth police car allowed. A number of politicians tried to go to a regular speeding ticket but that did not happen until 99 when they got rid of Reasonable and Prudent as a daytime speed limit.

You’re in TO, right? Familiar with this spot?

60km/h that should be closer to an 80km/h, based on the location and constuction. Drops to 40km/h for a school zone that is WELL OFF THE ROAD, with LOADS OF PARKING, whose fields are WELL FENCED OFF, for the space of LIGHTS (2 sections). Oh, and a Community Safety zone for good measure. And of course the cops like to sit right in that first road into the zone, just barely past the “40" sign, where they’re hidden behind a building. And they have fun in the other direction as well. It’s downhill, past the school, and you can see the “60" sign ahead... conveniently placed JUST to the other side of the road the cops like to sit in. Now imagine this at night. Wide open, LITERALLY wide, school is closed, it’s now nearer to a 90km/h road in reality. But of course, the school zone and community safety zones are still in effect and very handy for balancing the books.

Fun fact: Coming the opposite direction one day (in the downhill direction) I tried a little experiment. I got to the 60km/h limit, stayed there until I hit the 40 sign, and just let it coast. At the other end of the 40 zone I still hadn’t dropped down to 40km/h.
