Looking at car statistics is always fun, especially in a country that always seems to be a bit different. Here are the numbers for 2016.

20. BMW 2-series (1883 cars)

19. Toyota Prius (1985 cars)

2. Mitsubishi Outlander (5687 cars)

1. Volkswagen Golf (13148 cars)

As usual, we see electric cars and cars with hybrid variants do well. Volvo had a bad year with the V70 ending production, the XC60 and the V40 starting to get old and the V90 not being cheap nor available enough (yet) to make an impact.

I’m surprised by the Mazda crossovers and the Merc B-Class. I assume the Toyotas, the Mitsubishi and the BMW 2-series are mostly hybrids?

Where are the French cars by the way? Where I live there are 5 in the top 20, which is less than what I expected. Not enough hybrid options?

I need to drive a 2 seriest grand tourer thingy to see if im being to harsh on them. They look a little less ugly in person than in photos, but certainly better looking than many MPVs.

any hydrogen powered cars sold in Norway?

I suspect the success of the B-class might have something to do with the Electric Drive version.

Interesting, thanks

Weird...they all seem to resemble each other really closely except maybe Tesla, and it’s pictured from a different angle so who knows?

I forgot about that version. So that leaves number 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18 without hybrid options, right? 13/20 with a hybrid/electric option or fully so, not a bad score.

Mazda has a solid standing in Norway, and their crossovers are considered quite good. As BvdV said below, the B-class is there because of the electric version, and your assumptions are correct.

I can’t see models lower than number 20, but Peugeot was the 12th best selling manufacturer, Renault 17th and Citroën 20th (DS 28th). Both Suzuki and Tesla sold more cars than Renault in Norway. It is probably due to a low number of hybrid or electric models and a reputation of bad quality.

I’m very undecided about the 225xe pictured. Offers a lot for the money, but it looks like you’re 70 years old.

I’ve seen both Mercedes B-class and Hyundai ix35's that has been hydrogen powered. They’re not common at all though.

The i3 is also quite different, but I see your point. We like our wagons and small crossovers.

Lol applogies, not meant as a comment on any country’s population but instead on the derivative / emulative behavior of carmakers

Interesting. That’s respectively #4, #2, #13 and #29 here. Renault outsells everyone but VW. Give the top 20 list I can see the need for hybrids/electrics to be successful in Norway. The quality thing is a weird one, as you’ve got VWs at #1 and #4. People here still have the wrong sentiment that VWs are reliable and a cost-effective way of owning a used car though, so I guess Norwegians are just as far removed from reality as the Dutch.

No need to apologize! There is definitely enough diversity in the market (see DS brand), but new car buyers are behaving a bit like sheep..

What I do miss in the list are the hybrid Volvos (V60 PHEV and XC90 T8 Twin Engine), though they might be a bit too expensive to make the list. It’s also odd that almost every EV offered in Europe is in there, except for the Renault ZOE.

Also comparing this list to the list for the Netherlands, the lack of A and B segment cars becomes very obvious, I guess you guys don’t like small cars.

So Toyota sold 8 times as many Prius wagons in Norway, as Kia sold K900s in the United States.

Oh scratch that that is a Corolla iM wagon isn’t it.

Well, to be honest, our cars are taxed in such a way the prevalence of B and especially A segment cars in our country is quite unusual. Just hop over the border with Germany or even Belgium and watch the difference.

Yes. The Auris is sold in the US as the Corolla iM. The sedan-only Corolla isn’t even available in certain European countries, as most strongly prefer hatchbacks and wagons. Most Aurii are sold with the Prius drivetrain though, at least in countries like Norway (and my native the Netherlands) they are.

Okay at first I thought is was a euro version of our Prius V.Which I just realized should be pronounced 5, for the 5 doors. I guess they pronounce it Vee to match the compact Prius C

We got the Prius V too. The Auris is just the Euro-Corolla, if you will. With an optional hybrid drivetrain, hatchback or wagon. Yaris has an optional hybrid drivetrain too.

I agree on the quality aspect with VW. Another thing is that VW is regarded class independent in Norway, and doesn’t have any stereotypes attached.

Well if that’s the case, they’re not fully wrong, the boot is a bit cramped due to the battery, and it’s not the roomiest car possible. But I thought the 4wd hybrid drivetrain would be suitable to Norway.

Im not fussed how I look really, I did buy a bright blue Panda on purpose. Im more concerned with how much of a step down it is from a 1 series driving wise. Itd be interesting to compare them.

I’ve found this:

2016 ble det registrert 24 245 nye nullutslipp personbiler, det er 1543 færre (-6,0 prosent) enn i samme periode i 2015. 23 av de nye nullutslippsbilene er hydrogenbiler , resten er elbiler.

According to my best guess of the Norwegian language, that’s 23 H2 powered vehicles in 2016

Also, no emission vehicles were down 6% on 2015.
