I’m still bothered by the fact that guy has safety glasses on his fucking head and still chooses not to wear them...

Thermite is some nasty stuff. I read a book about the 2003 invasion of Iraq called Thunder Run. In it they tell of an Abrams tank that had a mishap on an Iraqi overpass and was disabled. The convoy had to keep moving so they had no choice but to abandon it and throw a couple thermite grenades down the hatch to basically burn it to the ground so it couldn’t be salvaged.

In college, I worked for a company that did commercial windows. Of course, being a college student for which this was just something to pay the bills while I was in school, there was no way I was ruining my hearing or eyes over a job like that, so I always wore earplugs and safety glasses when needed. The full timers were just too tough for that sissy shit. Watched one of ‘em drill directly above their head, looking up, and *shocking* got a red hot chip in their eyeball. After watching him dance, cuss, and try to get it out for 10 minutes, I walked to the truck, got him a pair of safety glasses and walked back. Handed them to him with no comment. He took them, said thanks, set them down, and went right back to what he was doing. Didn’t bother from then on.

There are a couple other ways to do it, but this way requires no electricity and not much training. It’s quite a common method.

maybe because he’s european, we’re not as anal about safety glasses as you americans are. as long as he’s wearing all the required safety gear he’s ok.

The biggest advantage of aluminothermic welding is that it is barely reliant on operator skill (when compared to other types of welding): as long as you can follow a checklist, each and every weld should be successful.

Yeah, neither crew is an example of how it should be done: at the very least they should wear flame resistant clothing, safety glasses and a helmet. Propane can start pooling in the ballast bed in case of a leak, with explosive consequences.
