Kinja'd!!!

This was my first truck, purchased my freshman year of college. 91 lariat, 302, auto, tow package.... It had 111k when I bought it, and around 125k when I sold it a year later. All the emissions control equipment and catalytic converters had been removed, with a dual glasspack exhaust set up and some kind or other of aftermarket PROM for the ECU to make it not miss all the missing emissions stuff had been done by the previous owner. I ditched the factory airbox for a dual cone set up and some under-drive pullies to round it out. It breathed all right for 302 of that era, but it certainly couldn’t be registered anywhere that did emissions testing.   It had some charm to it, and I really did like it.

Things to know about them: Assume the ball joints and radius arm bushings are shot on every ford truck of that era. The rear-wheel only ABS really only functions a pressure cut off switch to the rear drums, which is important to know in certain circumstances. If it that RWABS kicks in at an inopportune time when backing down the launch ramp with a boat behind you, your choices are taking the truck swimming or remembering to jump on the parking brake.

Also, that AOD transmission is on the more fragile side on half-ton truck trannies of that time. They do not tolerate high fluid temperatures, so smart gear management when towing is required and larger than factory auxiliary coolers are a really good idea.
