and by should I mean I will but I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve decided to get into the skoolie lifestyle and I’m currently shopping for buses. I know I want a diesel and I’d really like a bus with a GVWR under 26,000 lbs so I don’t have to get a CDL. I don’t know if I should get hydraulic brakes or air brakes, what motors and transmissions to avoid or what to think of the different manufacturers. Any school bus experts on here? What do you say Oppo?

P.S. - Please help me convince my wife to let me give the bus a racing livery. I’ve always been a Martini man but I think Gulf might work better on a bus.

That’s crazy that you would find that right as I’m looking for one. Unfortunately I don’t want a flat nose as I’d like something between me and the road in the event of an accident.

I think anything with air brakes requires a CDL, or at the very least an air brake endorsement.

Luckily in these parts, busses can be found in many fields

I don’t think that’s the case in Ohio but I could be wrong.

My understanding has also always been that anything with air brakes requires the endorsement, which at least in NM and TX only can be added to a CDL.

Better find out for sure before you buy. There’s a guy locally trying to offload a box truck because he got one too big with air brakes, and doesn’t have a CDL. Personally I’d rather have hydraulic brakes, which I think most school busses have anyways.

I’m leaning towards hydraulic because it’s what I know and they sound simpler.

You can find a nice, 18 year old bus for only $3,500 US? Wow, that’s not bad!
