A transmission does not a hybrid make, as diesel-electrics generally don’t have a method to store energy. To be fair, they are comparable to series hybrids without battery.
The American offerings focus on power and heft, as usual:

The funny thing about that is that most locomotives and ships are series hybrids that are minus a battery. Some later generation locomotives do have batteries, making them true series hybrids, though diesel-electrics themselves are awfully close to being a series hybrid.

Yup, great for efficiency, as you have lower transmission losses and the engine can be optimized for a narrow working zone. Emissions at low load can still be absolutely awful though, especially in the old two-strokes, which is why true hybridization is becoming more of a thing.

Man, I’m embarrassed for how much I like planes, trains, automobiles, and boats. Our new gaming computer has FSX, TS 17 (ugh, Dovetail), Car Mechanic Simulator, Project CARS, and a couple ship sims for me to lose my mind in.

No ETS2/ATS? I tried TS, but couldn’t really get into it, so I just got a job in the railroads instead. Got PCars in the Humble Monthly, but Dirt Rally is currently taunting me.

Funny enough, if I didn’t get into tech, I would have totally tried to become an airline pilot, but I found the ease of entry into tech more appealing. lol Also, totes saving that MD-11! :)
I got PCars in Humble as well, it’s delightfully scary, I think I need a wheel for this game or something.

In this part of the world that’s not necessarily the case. In mainland Europe the majority of railway lines are wired up so no diesel used. Non electric lines frequently carry passenger traffic using diesel/hydraulic multiple units rather than loco hauled trains. Diesel locos are generally diesel/electric though.
I don’t think diesel electrics are more efficient - if they were diesel/hydraulic trains wouldn’t exist.

Oh, and most ships just use a great big drive shaft to turn the prop. You get electric drive mainly on cruise ships where you can mix and match different engines to power the ship or its passenger comforts in different proportions.

I’ll see if I can find some efficiency comparisons at work, but should be about 5% difference in modern material (used to be a lot more in the early days). Diesel-hydraulics’ sales are helped by them being (quite a bit) cheaper and lighter. Hydrostatic even more so, but they are kinda awful for everything that isn’t low-speed.

Oh, yes I’ve wasted so many hours in Euro Truck Sim 2. I think the only reason I stopped playing it long ago was because I didn’t have a strong enough computer. Now I dooooooooo. ;) Welp, now I have to download it again!
