NO I DON’T LIKE UR KID

But yeah. Do that.

That said... To the City of Toronto: A COLLEGE DOES NOT WARRANT A SCHOOL ZONE.

School zones are like the one place I will completely obey the speed limit, I don’t want to hit any kids nor do I want to find out if it’s zero tolerance when it comes to enforcement. When I was in high school they’d enforce the zone pretty hard, not much else to do in Roswell.

Nah. Kids are annoying.

But for real. Some people need to cool it with how fast they’re going.

I meant like for the police, since it’s a pretty low crime area.

Frankly I don’t give a shit. You* are now tall enough people can see you. You’re old enough to know what cars are and what they’ll do to you, and also old enough to know HOW AND WHERE to jaywalk, if you MUST jaywalk. Can’t figure that out? Boo fucking hoo.

Not that I’m going to run you down deliberately, or encourage others to do so. I will try to avoid you if you stick yourself in my path. But I have no sympathy for you if you get hit jaywalking in a stupid place at night in dark clothing. For your family, maybe. Not you. Fuck you.

And stop when the school bus is picking up or dropping off kids.

Every morning when I take my kids to school, we cross a 35 mph street, with blinking light and two crossing guards. Every morning, there is some chucklehead going 45 down the road, usually on their phone. Occasionally, the county sheriff shows up to clock the zone, but not nearly enough. And then, they usually set up at the end of the zone, after a stop sign, rather than clocking the drivers as they actually drive past the school. It does nothing to get people to slow down. If they were really interested in enforcement and not making money, they would stand out on the sidewalk, in the middle of the zone, where they could be seen. But then they wouldn’t catch anybody.

A few months ago, a father and daughter walking home from school were killed when two assholes in Mustangs were street racing. One clipped a minivan and then hit them. They caught one of the drivers, but the other has never been found.

I like your idea of police standing where they can be seen.

The dot shows where the cops hide, behind a wall. There is a stop sign where the two streets meet in front of the school. So the cops clock cars going west, after they leave the stop sign. Sure, the school zone is still active, but nailing cars there does nothing to slow them down in the school zone. The real problem is people coming around the curve at the bottom of the picture and flying past the front of the school, before they get to the stop sign.

Here people tend to be pretty obedient for the first half of a school zone, then forget about he speed restrictions once they stop for a light or stop sign even if the school zone continues for another block. I wonder if that’s what the cops expect to happen there?

Kinja'd!!! "ttyymmnn" (ttyymmnn)
01/13/2017 at 10:18, STARS: 1

I catch myself doing exactly that. If you’re driving west on this road, you go slowly until you get to the stop sign at the intersection. Then, you’re past the school, with open road ahead, so you just take off. And that’s where the cops nail you. Yes, the zone is still in effect and yes, you must obey it or get cited. But, as I said, if the cops were really interested in keeping kids safe, they’d set up somewhere else. I may talk to them next time I see them.

Holy cow, how does this even happen? How fast was the car taking that turn anyway, and how could they not see a freaking crossing guard?

Around here cops will often run radar in school zones and parks. Not everyday, but often enough that if you make a habit out of speeding through them you will absolutely get nailed multiple times per year.

It is quite unfortunate when something like this happens, especially when it just takes people to pay attention when they are behind the wheel. There was a crossing guard at this accident from what I read. It is a bit different from a police officer, but at least there was some presence in an “official” standpoint. My town is a bit different as they have a police officer placed at every school sometimes to act as a crossing guard/traffic control. I am not sure if they did that prior to Sandy Hook, it may have just been standard crossing guards, but there is a cruiser and officer at every school now. I live in Newtown which Sandy Hook is part of, and I am sure the police presence is in response to those events.

Freakin jerks. One day last summer I was with my kids at the playground behind their school. When we left and were about to cross the street, I step very obviously one foot out in the very well marked crosswalk as I always do, and this car comes along not even speeding that much, with plenty of time to see me (holding my kids hands) and stop, he doesn’t even slow down. All windows open, so I yell ‘HEY CROSSWALK’ as he flies by (I can be VERY LOUD when I need to). Passenger flips me the bird through the sunroof... I almost blew my top. I wasn’t quick enough to get the plate number or there would have been a scene later...

My Mrs had to yank one of my kids out of the way in a crosswalk because someone didn’t see them, or the fucking crossing guard...

We moved. Some asshat drove around their school bus with lights flashing and everything. A couple of the mothers had to bodily throw themselves in front of the car to stop it. Luckily the next time one of the other mothers was there. She chased the fucker down and tore a strip off them. And then took out her badge when they mouthed off, and wrote down everything about the dick in her notebook.

What about off hours? The signs even say 25 only during school hours, 35 otherwise. Cops here generally only enforce if you do it during the loading periods (morning, lunch, and last bell) or you’re an ass going 40+. The schools are on generally busy roads so take that as you will.

P.S. I don’t condone it obviously, I still remember what it was like to need crossing guards.

At least in the Greater Philadelphia area (including Jersey suburbs), it’s been standard for a good number of years. Can’t speak for the country though.
