There’s a guy who DD’s a fairly new Panamara. It has michelin X-Ice tires. Seems legit, and is a beautiful car.

panamera is a “sedan” not a sports car, so he better DD it!
also, i bought a set of x-ice 3's for a jaguar i owned a few years ago. ~1/4 the price of the car itself all said and done. but those were some confidence inspiring tires. not “performance winter” tires, but i wasn’t doing serious sport driving in that car either. :)

They’re not too expensive when you go a rim size smaller (if you have the caliper clearance) and go thinner. On my FocuST I bought a set of slightly used Michelin Xices for $400 on stealies. They’re 205/60R16s as opposed to the 235/40R18s for the OEM summer rubber. New ones are like $50 less per tire than the oem Eagle F1 tires.
I don’t know why people get the same WIDE profile tire when getting winter rubber instead of getting a thinner tire....if you’re storing the rubber and swapping them on the rim each season, it’ll be cheaper and take up no more room just to get some steal rims or cheapo rims in a better size.

After not even being able to move my car out of a FLAT parking space with a dusting of snow, I learned that snow tires are an absolute must. The Michelin Xices I have on my Focus ST just eat up the snow.
I’m starting to learn how snow tires react in the snow, and it’s very interesting. At first I thought they would just grip in the snow like all seasons grip in the wet...which isn’t the case at all. You still slip and slide during hard braking, but it slips progressively and predictively....as opposed to shitty allseasons that just slide all over the place with no control.

But note that the summers are still cheaper.
On cars with more common sized tires, the difference between a summer and winter can be pretty substantial. A set of summers for some cars I’ve owned were about $50 more per tire than winter tires, and these were cheap tires in general...

its probably that there are more options for low quality summer or all season tires. i suppose selling a crappy snow tire would be a hard job.
