Just point to the Camry and say: It could be worse.

Tell her, “You’re name’s not Vinny, and you don’t wear 20 gold chains at once.”

Driver was the Texas equalivalent of Vinny. Yellow polo tucked into dockers and neon orange frame Oakleys. This is a look I cannot pull off...

Sometimes I think it is a Camry the way my wife picks up dents in it. PS just started an oil consumption test on the Forester today.

I got a new short block, the car has a noticable power gain! My dealer was pretty cool about the whole thing. I hope this never happens again, I can’t afford a new engine every 30k.

Yeah I wouldn’t complain about more power! But I would complain about being without the car. Mine is at 50k and the oil burning didn’t really get bad until 42ish so I guess mine lasted longer than yours by a little. But you’re right hopefully the tolerances are better on the new blocks and this doesn’t keep happening.

When they have to sneak off with their significant other in dad’s old Subi, they will appreciate the ample “cargo space” ;)

This I am aware of. Things were done in the back of my mom’s minivan in dark parking lots when I was a teenager. But I still plan to keep the Outback until it implodes. I have tried to use that argument to convince my wife that I’m buying the kids Miata’s when they turn 16... so far she has seen right through it.

You just have the wrong Subaru! The kids love riding in the WRX.

Your other option is to equip the Outback to be a little cooler. Check out Wes’ build. Overland Outback is the best Outback.

I also plan to make my 4th gen a forever car. Buuuut:

I’m getting my low oil light every 2000 to 2200 miles. Starting an oil consumption test tomorrow.

I also have a ‘14 Forester consuming oil at the same rate - I just started the consumption test today! This Outback has been behaving so far though, no oil consumption to speak of.

Perhaps both. I was talking about this in comments on another thread last night. We have an extended drivetrain warranty on the Outback (CVT’s really scared me 4 years ago) to 100k, but I’m seriously considering a mild lift and knobby tires after that. I’ve seen Wes’s stuff. Actually Gizmodo was the first Kinja place I was out of the grays for commenting on one of his articles.

I’m not sure I’m going to be keeping the Forester forever and a WRX is on the short list for replacement. When I was shopping the ‘15+ WRX was still out of my price range and the previous generation hadn’t depreciated enough to seem like a good deal buying used. I was also coming from a larger crossover and had some trepidation about going right to a sedan. I test drove the FoST and GTI, but didn’t even bother with the WRX, because no hatch and also I knew I’d probably just buy one and blow the budget and make my wife mad. But I realize now I could definitely live with a sedan. The bigger question is are we going to sell the Forester and get a WRX or get something even smaller like a 500 Abarth or 86 as a third car.

I think the answer to that is an SVX + straight pipes...

I understand your position on the sedan. I pulled the trigger on my WRX when they announced a hatchback was not available for the ‘15 model year. I bought the last available new hatchback in the state.

Starting with a set of more aggressive tires won’t affect your warranty. Then comes a roof rack, basket or box, and then it just snowballs from there. Buying a roof box made a huge difference in the utility of the WRX. I can carry plenty of camping gear when needed, but it also gives me a safe, dry, and out-of-the-way place to put luggage or long items like pop-up canopies for outdoor events.

I’m looking to upgrade the stock roof bars since I discovered the OEM bars are too flimsy.

Uhhhhh... there’s an SVX near me on CL for $1500 that I’ve been tempted by many times, but it’s a resprayed two tone dumpster fire.

Have you considered the Forester XT? Think Cobb offers an AccessPort that will bump up the power a bit.
The real good news though, is that your daughter cares enough about cars to want a cool one. That means you did something right!

Kinja'd!!!

I was on my phone earlier, so I couldn’t post pictures. The silver WRX above is mine. The black one below is my inspiration. His has a 3"lift, skid plates, a light bar in front, and a basket with accessories up top. I’m surprised he is using the OEM roof bars as mine flex a lot more than I am comfortable with. Perhaps the basket provides additional stiffness.

Kinja'd!!!

The only thing I don’t like is how he has a small box mounted sideways at the rear of the basket. Seems to me that it would act like a big air dam on the roof. I think I would also go with LEDs instead of the lamps.

It sure looks sharp!

Indeed. She’s always pointing out cars she likes, letting me know when she knows what one is and asking what the ones she doesn’t know are. Her favorite question is asking if something is fast when it has racing stripes. I haven’t really considered the XT. I’m too much of a manual addict.

That muse make it even more frustrating! You think the 6MT makes it worse? That’s what my otherwise very cooperative and helpful dealer tried to tell me.

I’ve been told from multiple sources that it is worse with the 6MT, including a friend who is a tech a Toyota dealer under the same ownership who talks with the Subaru techs. I don’t think he has any reason to BS me.

I guess it makes sense.

The tech I talked to today gave me some tips on how to make it burn a little extra. They’re confident they can get me set up with a new shortblock that’ll use no oil.

Fair enough - I was thinking newer. I’ve seen some pretty awesome modified SG Foresters around. Someone in my neighborhood actually has two turbo manual SG’s. (Guy is something of a lunatic - he also has an E-Type, a pristine S-Type, a ratty 914 and DD’s a 90's Dodge Ram). They look stock outside, but they go like stink. Not sure what all he has done under the hood, but the boost gauges he added inside suggest they are at least blowing more than stock.
