Death from above at 4,200 rounds per minute. That’s amazing how you hear the rounds hit before you hear the belch of the Vulcan.

Also, please tell me that the F-35 will be able to provide that sort of CAS.

F-35A - 182 rounds. Software to fire the cannon will be ready by 2018.

A-10 - 1,174 rounds (that’s the small load), available since 1977

The Navy version, with its external pod, can hold a few more.

Unless “a few” means 1,000, I think we’re in trouble.

At that rate, the pilot may as well hang out of the cockpit and strafe with their personal sidearm.

It took a few passes for me to figure that out. Neat.

videos like this its seems like they are just shooting into the trees. I have no idea whats going on. are the soldiers seeing the enemy or do they just get a command to fire a direction and hope it keeps them in a certain area?

Relax - the A-10 is going to be around for a while. And if not I’ll buy them surplus and setup a private “Battlefield Rapid Response Airborne Platform” contract firm. Taking applications for pilots now just to be ready.

I’ll paint them in WWI German Camo colors.

What they’re doing is called suppressing fire. The big machine gun that this guy is using is ideal for laying down sustained fire intended to keep an enemy from advancing or returning fire.

Now THAT would be awesome.

From what I gathered from the commentary it sounded like they had an idea where the enemy was and were firing in the general direction.

He’s on comms spotting targets. Hence why he calls for mortar adjustments. You won’t really actively target and try to hit with an LMG until you have corralled the enemy into a fall back position to which you can overwhelm them with coordinated fire.

Maybe I should do an AMA on being a forward observer in Khandahar, Helmand, and during Moshtarak.

FYI: that’s a large caliber belt fed on the opposing side and most liekly the reason they were cleared hot for fixed wing CAS. And at the end they are marking the location with smoke for more CAS.

thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
So let me understand correctly basically they are just trying to pin the enemy down by firing at them and calling on radio for the hogs to come attack the group of enemies?

how often would they actually see the enemy with their eyes vs them being spotted some other way and then being fired upon to verify their location and then firing back to keep them suppressed?

thats kinda what I was thinking because I dont know if its just the video but it appears the enemy is never actually spotted but maybe their shots are heard and gun flashes are seen or something.
