Anyone remember the Toyota SFR from a few years ago?

Kinja'd!!!

Looked like an awesome little car. Cheap, tiny, light, and most importantly, RWD.

Don’t worry if you forgot, because it seems as if Toyota has completely forgot about it as well. For something that looked to be production ready, I’m sad that no news had come of it after its unveiling. Anyone know what happened to it?

I’m glad they forgot it. Yuck! Can we all forget it again now please?

I’m following it. Pretty much would be first in line to buy it if they make it.

It is such a perfect car. Modern day NA Miata coupe. If only it was a bit lighter, perhaps with a smaller engine, sub 2k lb could’ve been possible. We can only dream though.

It makes no market sense to sell, I guess.

Right? Considering that it looked so close to being production ready for a concept I’m surprised everyone has forgotten about it over a year and a bit.

I’m not surprised. “Enthusiasts” are their own worst enemy. They would rather have heated rear seats and cargo capacity, and 2 pedals. Also they need navigation and all the gizmos telling them G force, HP, and how much throttle the ecu decides you want, that they are now in “sport” mode since their butt can’t really feel anything anymore thanks to that “nvh” crap people value so much.

No one wants to get in a car and feel the drive anymore, as if the car is an extension of their body. They’d rather pussyfoot their new car that can “go o-60 in 4 seconds, has a top speed of 180 and corner at .9 Gs!”, while they barely hit 3,000 rpm in their “sport” paddle shifted “sports car”.

Last I heard, Toyota is still working on it but it got pushed back for the 86 refresh.

I haven’t been following very closely because I’m worried I’ll be disappointed. I really want it.

They would rather have...

Don’t lump me in with all those luxury enthusiasts! I’m buiding my own car to get away from all those creature comforts.

I’m not surprised. “Enthusiasts” are their own worst enemy.

But this couldn’t be more true.

For every enthusiast who is actually interested in purchasing a car like this, there are 10 more who say they’d get one but won’t, 20 more who would argue that it’s too small/weak/pointless, 15 more that say they’ll wait for the turbo version, 3 who would never consider anything other than a Porsche 911, 50 more who would never consider a non-V8/turbo/VTEC sports car, and 4 who will probably hate the fact that they ended up in a Corolla instead.

We’re a small and fractured bunch, so any enthusiast oriented car is likely quick to die without any non-enthusiast sales.

It is not forgotten. Tomica makes a model of it. I am hoping for Toyota to make it. I don’t expect it to be sold in the U.S. If it is sold in the U.S. I know I will not be able to afford one.

I would happily rock this alongside my modded na miata. As long as it has ac I could think of it as a luxury car

Maybe they can sell the plans and molds to Fiat Chrysler. They’d build it.

Toyota is allergic to fun.

It needs the 210 hp Yaris engine.

This would be same power to weight as Lotus Elise.
