Saw them close for Wu-Tang on Randall Island in the pouring rain. One of the best shows I have been to.

That was the album that forced me to buy a CD player.

It was the first album I wanted that wasn’t available in Vinyl. I remember standing there in the record store holding it in my hand, thinking to myself, “Well... Looks like today is the day I’m  buying a CD player.”

Somewhat related: I went to highschool with a girl named Leslie Maynard. Being stupid highschool kids, my friends and I would (behind her back, but really with no malice because she was a really nice girl) refer to her as Leslie Maynard James Keenan Ivory Wayans Brothers Show.

I just checked the timeline:

Video: March 1992

Album recorded: April-May 1991

Makes sense how close the performance was to what they did in the studio.

I remember the factory Blaupunkt in my first Vanagon had a CD changer input, and a 12v signal wire to switch from the radio/tape to the input.

I thought I was so clever.

I had the CD player mounted on the floor on a stand, ran power to a 12v socket I installed in the glove box, and a 12v switch on the dashboard for the remote wire.

It still skipped like crazy.

A more 90s nickname I cannot imagine! I also knew a girl with the last name Maynard, we did something similar (but less clever).

This exact CD player was the first one my family had. I remember handling it like a piece of fine china. Eric Clapton Unplugged was the first CD we had, and I still love that album. Hell, that CD is probably still in the giant 300-cd changer I bought years later.

Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane turns 50 on Feb 3.

That’s a milestone album too.

As for Albums of 92 in my current rotation (in order of their release):
- La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One - White Zombie
- Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell - Social Distortion
- It’s a Shame About Ray - The Lemonheads
- House of Pain - House of Pain
- Gordon - BNL
- Blind Melon - Blind Melon
- Dirt - Alice in Chains
- Core - STP
- Rage Against the Machine - RAtM
- The Chronic - Dr. Dre

I have eclectic taste when it comes to music.

An eclectic taste is the best way to experience music. Folks who hone in on one genre are missing out.

Also, damn. The early 90s produced some great music.

Oh yes, I was so excited about mine! I got one with a ps/2 plug in the front so you could plug in a keyboard and type in the names of the cds. Now it’s parked “permanently” in a family house we only use in the summer, so every once in a while we just hit ‘shuffle.’ And on that note, there is a LONG pause between songs while the disc is changed... anyway.

I saw Wu Tang open for Rage at Deer Creek in Indy around 1996. I’ve been to a lot of concerts and some large festivals. Wu Tang and Rage is still what I compare all concerts against.

1991-94 is a wealth of cross-genre creativity. If you map strong, classic albums starting in 1989 and continuing to 1997 it’s remarkably close to bell curve.

Also correlating to a rise of more readily available designer drugs, but that’s a different discussion for a different day.
