Spent a few hours Tuesday digging through a barn full of crap to unearth my girlfriend’s Honda Rebel 250, 1986 model, 25766 miles. The intent is to get it running so we can both learn how to ride. My short 5'6" stature and her not much taller 5'8" stature mean this tiny little bike fits us like an absolute glove (much like my Miata, honestly) and from what I can tell these can be fixed with a hammer and JIS screwdriver.

Current list:

- Air up and assess tires

- New battery

- Clean everything as best as possible to spot any leaks

- Figure out why the clutch is stuck

- Fix turn signal masts

- Check extent of fuel tank rust

- Party on, Wayne

Those tires need to be replaced. There! The assessment of the tires is done.

Probably. I think the last time this was ridden was 4 years ago.

Agree with the other comment on the tires. Also, I wouldn’t put much money into the turn signals. If it falls over they’re going to break anyway. I wrapped the stalks on mine (old Shadow 750) in electrical tape to hold them firm and called it good for awhile.

I was gonna paint some PVC pipe flat black to hold the turn signals, lol.

I’d love to find a cheap or free old bike to learn how to ride. The missus wouldn’t like it, but I need to check it off my bucket list one of these days.

You have strange, small, timid dreams.

That’ll be a great bike to learn on. Most safety classes used Rebel 250s

That’s hilarious. I also lost stalk bolts out of my Shadow 500 several times. I used to buy them two at a time. :)

I had a similar thought when I saw this post. I’d love to learn and maybe have a 500cc cruiser but I know my wife wouldn’t be impressed so someone (giving one/a too good to say no deal) would be pretty awesome.

Maybe I’ll just drag one home, put it in the garage, promise that I got it REAL CHEAP and that I’m going to fix it up and sell it, but that I have to RIDE it to make sure its really fixed and ready for sale, then take it to work a few days, tell her how much I’m saving on gas......

It’ll be a long process but maybe, MAYBE I can win her over if I chip away at her a little at a time.

I was amazed at how comfy it is to sit on. And how low the center of gravity is. You can balance on the thing while it’s just sitting there. I’m torn now because I want to ride motorcycles but I don’t want to get turned into a smear by some soccer mom in a Tahoe.

cheaper then a bike, and you actually learn how to ride properly :)

What if the bike is free and I watch a lot of YouTube? :D

I get a lot of ‘i learn on youtube’ riders in my course.

they are, without a shadow of a doubt, the WORST riders I come across. AND they think they know shit, so they refuse to listen.

do it right, take the course. its also cheaper when you fact in if you drop an MSF bike, you dont have to worry about the damage. when you drop your own...hahahahaha

If I was going to be serious about riding I would, trust me.
