They’re opulent, they’re powerful, they’re roomy, and they’re practical. You can bomb down interstates at 90 MPH all day long, switch up the dampers and throttle mapping to make it surprisingly fun on a backroad, jack up the air suspension and go up a trail to a rented (or owned) cottage, tow a small watercraft to the boat launch, and comfortably accommodate four friends through all of this. They’re also way cheaper than DB11s, Granturismos, Dawns, and nicely-equipped AMG GTS coupes, which means you can spend the extra money on more adventure.

no, not fast SUV’s, those are terrifying at speed...I know. You mean fast crossovers.

we had a GMT400 suburban that had a supercharged 454, and it could get to its governed limit of 99 WAAAY too fast...and it was unpleasant. Thats a fast SUV and no thanks!

LWB sedans are better in every way. Ride better, handle better, and are more comfortable at speed. The longer wheel base and lower suspension make for a far better experience on the freeway, especially at 100+ mph. The seating position is also superior to SUVs and you can usually get 30-40 way adjustable massage seats which aren’t available in most premium SUVs. Even the SUVs that have massage seats don’t have as many adjustments as big sedans.

Big sedans are also way quieter. Even expensive, $100k+ SUVs has more wind noise than a sedan. SUV just displace so much air that there’s no getting around it even with insulation and noise canceling. Also all SUVs get terrible mileage over 80 mph. While large sedan can do 500+ miles per tank on the freeway at speed most SUVs will struggle to do 350-400 miles.

You can even jack up air suspension on sedans for a few inches of ground clearance. It’s enough to tackle a maintained trail or slowly drive over a curb.

This is coming from the owner of a V8 full-size sedan who also has a fast premium SUV.

I wouldn’t trust a supercharged big block 454 in a GMT400. Mine had a somewhat built small block, and it had way too much power for the chassis.

My Blazer also had the good ‘ol appalling GM steering quality. Fun times sawing the wheel back and forth vigorously at highway speed with no change at all to the direction of the truck. It confused/entertained passengers.

I’ll tell you exactly what they are useful for.

Third world/Developing countries.

Driving in the US or in Europe with nicely paved roads and logically placed speedhumps is pointless in a crossover, hence why they still don’t make much sense. In a country like Mexico where there are endless potholes, random gravel, dirt, imbeciles driving public transport vehicles, banked curves, massive crests and deformations in the pavement you just can’t go fast in something like an M6. An X6M? Oh boy no one will even touch you without destroying the underside of their car.

Kinja'd!!! "Jake - Has Bad Luck So You Don't Have To" (murdersofa)
01/12/2017 at 13:36, STARS: 0

What. What the fuck? There’s nothing to analyze. Stop throwing words around, they’re not your food. A Grand Touring car must be a 2-door car with room for two people and their luggage with a two seat or 2+2 seating arrangement, designed from the ground-up for the purpose of being a grand tourer, with all focus on the car to the comfort and driving sensation to the driver.

First and foremost a grand tourer is a driver’s car. They don’t chase lap times, they don’t smash ‘ring times, they’re meant to provide the essence of motoring in luxury all the way across the country’s motorways.

That is a grand touring car. SUVs do not have the seating arrangement, most lack the correct amount of doors, they either have incompetent handling or horrid stiff suspension to very little end because the handling will always be compromised severely by the height and bulk of these monstrosities.

Kinja'd!!! "G_Body_Man: Sponsored by the number 3" (gbodyman)
01/12/2017 at 13:54, STARS: 0

The thing you’re overlooking here is purpose. A GT car is used to crush continents in comfort, luxury, speed, and relative style. They’re not strictly driver-focused, and they’re not strictly for only two people. Therefore, a fast SUV fits the bill just as good as, if not better than, most “GT” cars at what a GT car is supposed to do. Handling and driver-focus is more of a sports car thing than a GT car thing, so it’s best to leave that to the F-types and Corvettes of the world.

Kinja'd!!! "Jake - Has Bad Luck So You Don't Have To" (murdersofa)
01/12/2017 at 14:21, STARS: 0

They’re not strictly driver-focused

Yes they are. They’re all about swaddling the driver in luxury and giving them a good time behind the wheel on a road trip.

they’re not strictly for only two people.

They’re about two doors and two people with an optional back seat for *reasons*

Handling and driver-focus is more of a sports car thing than a GT car thing

No it isn’t.

Kinja'd!!! "G_Body_Man: Sponsored by the number 3" (gbodyman)
01/12/2017 at 14:32, STARS: 0

If you think all GT cars are highly driver-focused, the Maserati Granturismo, Mercedes S63 Coupe, Aston Martin Rapide, and Bentley Continental GT would like to have a word with you. The GLE63 is more fun to drive than any of these, save for the S63 Coupe (my jury’s still out on that).
