Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.

Ahhh, the Nissan Quest: the shittiest of the Japanese minivans, at least for the past decade or so. Back in the ‘90s, Quests and Villagers were perhaps the only thing that could hold a candle to the mighty Grand Caravan in terms of speed and maneuverability. In the 2000's, the Quest became a tour-de-force of French styling, looking more like a Le Quément design than a Semple one. This impracticality was soon replaced by the Elgrand imported straight from Japan, although without the G35 platform and with piss-poor crash test ratings it’s not quite as likable as the Ody or Sienna. Anyways, which one is your favorite?

The options:

First Generation [1992 - 1998] V40 w/ facelift

Fun fact: I totally forgot the Nissan Quest was a thing until I saw this post.

I’m biased towards the 2nd gen. My dad has one (a Villager) and it’s treated the family well.

I’ve always thought the facelifted 2nd gen looks depressed.

I probably would be too if I was a Nissan Quest but still.

You don’t play the alphabet game on road trips? I obsessively look for Quests when I get to Q.

For X, it’s US Xpress Enterprises and Xtra Lease trucks.

Road trips for me usually involve focusing on driving because the 401 is basically Fury Road.

The Windstat had dissolving axle mounts, and got recalled for that, but the Quest and the Villager were different vans I think.

I’ve always liked the look of the 3rd gen Quest from the A-pillars back. I like that it has hips, it honestly resembles an old wagon (albeit too tall) from behind. Now the front clip on those is another story, that a visual horror-show.

Yes, but the Windstar was an entirely different platform and design from the Villager/Quest. The actualy reason why Ford had two entirely different minivans in its ‘90s lineup we may never know. Anyways, you have a new Elgrand-Quest? Do tell.

My first car was a 94 quest. I put an intake and exhaust on it...used to take it to the 1/8 mile drag races(where it would beat some crap civics and accords). Made the best of a hand me down car.

Indeed, although I don’t think the second row windows roll down which would be a deal-breaker in my book, especially with all that glass.

God the third gen is sooooo hideous.

Agreed, especially the facelift which somehow made it uglier and more generic. Love that interior, though, just maybe not in warm climes.

The interior was funky and, while not particularly nice, it was neat. The exterior looks droopy and awkward with that meandering beltline that kinda sags down to a ho-hum front end that is just offensively bad.

At least the bar down the middle had some sort of purpose IMO, if only for continuity within the Nissan lineup. The facelift gave it a joggle that just kind of distorts the grille and kind of makes it look like its been in an accident. As for the wobbly beltline, well, maybe that’s that French influence again...

Minivans are so wonderfully quick. Anyone who wants a CUV/SUV for suburban duties is just woefully wrong. (They have other purposes. The school run isn’t it, though. Unless it’s in two feet of snow.)

The 4th-gen actually isn’t exactly an Elgrand directly ported over to the US - it’s been embiggened by quite a lot. It’s nearly 5 inches wider, and 2 inches longer than the Elgrand...

it has good power and I like the CVT. thats about it. the thing that pisses me off the most is that you have to unlock the doors in order to open the drivers door. On any other car i’ve had, all the driver has had to do was pull the handle. Even in park it is like this.

Word. The French know how to nail a van. They should have done better.

The second gen looks depressed and the fourth caused the Elgrand to go FWD.

The third is gross.

Kinja'd!!!

Just gross.

And that leaves the first. You could do a lot better, but it was one of the first Japanese people carriers in the US to have sliding doors. Plus it had some grunt and a ridiculous rebadge as a nice little side story. I’d call it the winner.

Now now, someone’s holding an unreasonable grudge against the 4th gen Quest...

Well, I still think the should have just given us an Espace with sliding doors to celebrate their French partnership instead of trying to “go French” on their own.

Kinja'd!!!

10/10 would fourth-gen Espace (actually, no joke—if it was sold here we might have had one instead of our Odyssey because my parents shopped mainly on safety.)

Well, the first was kind of weirdly proportioned—I wouldn’t call it pretty, especially with the way too short rear overhang, but it was unique.

Kinja'd!!!

Only one sliding door though (why the hell did anyone ever think that was a good idea?) Oh yeah, and I never have figured out why Ford thought two totally different MPV’s was smart to have in the ‘90s.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Actually no, three.

Oh yeah, the first had plenty of problems and the fourth is definitely the best car here. My grudge is simply because of what happened to the Elgrand as a consequence, so you could say I’m being unfair here.

Also apparently Ford didn’t discontinue the Aerostar because they were afraid the replacement would be seen like the Ford Probe was to the Mustang. Source: Wiki page with the sign [clarification needed] .
