I kind of get it now. Drove this beautiful beast around the block (2008 S550) and it was amazing. The driver who brought it from the dealer is now actively looking for one. And they’re not terribly expensive. This one sold, with 118k miles, for under $15k

Has anyone ever seriously suggested that the S-Class isn’t in the highest traditions of German cars? I mean, they are meant to be leased because when things go wrong after a few years its ruinously expensive to fix but the S-class is well known for being amazing, even among front pagers.

W221s aren’t even horrendously expensive to maintain, provided you buy a good one.

W221 will probably be easier to live with than a W220 too (older ones esp), tech is less bleeding edge.

So you’re telling me a 221 S65 might be cheaper to maintain than my ‘220 S600?

About 3-4 years ago, a drunk driver totally destroyed all the cars in my uncle’s driveway, which included his CLS 550, he replaced it with a 2010 S550. Looks much better than the outgoing CLS at the time. It still looks like a $90k car, with its AMG wheels.

I haven’t heard of ABC failures being common in early W221s, and the air springs are more durable than those on the W220.

Come to think of it, I haven’t heard of an ABC failure on a W221 at all.

‘ruinously expensive’ sounds about right.

And the only air spring issues I’ve heard of have been isolated incidents.

Yes. What G body man said. Except for brakes. Crazy expensive.

221's are generally pretty reasonable to maintain. There are a few exceptions to the rule and a couple things to avoid, but they’re in a different league compared to 220's.

How much is crazy expensive? Like 2k a rotor or more ?

Pelican Parts lists a rotor from the OEM supplier (not Mercedes branded but the same rotor) as $830 for a front rotor, and $798 for a rear disc. Not cheap, but they are incredibly large and heavy rotors.

Pads and rotors about $2k for the rears and $3k for the fronts. Unless you get carbon, which is obviously much more expensive.
