Pretty much, this is a bullshit assignment in the same way that the bohemian lifestyle of hipsters in Brooklyn is bullshit. They might live poor for this period of time because it’s an experience, but they could easily pick up a phone and go back to their family’s wealth in the suburbs.
As a professional data analyst, I would caution against one-day for-assignment work like this because it is basically built on confirmation bias. What a good teacher/mentor would do is encourage volunteerism, not voyeurism.

Truth is often said in jest.
I took a class at my university that was entirely taught from headlines and hand-picked snippets from articles or historical writings. It was a required course.
One answer on a test that I wrote, thanks to being very uncomfortable with the wolf in sheep’s clothing method of teaching, was, “Based on what has been assigned for students to read, and instruction of the class one would be led to believe that X was the case.”
To be fair I disliked both sides of the argument because I could see past them and into the real motives, AKA critical thinking.
I graduated with high honors, and a 4.0 in my major but got a B in that class, the lowest grade she could give me without me taking her to task .

I actually always enjoyed assignments like these while I was in college, namely because the vague presentation of the what the instructions oor purpose of the exercise were granted a whole lot of personal freedom in grabbing the assignment and turning it into an opportunity not just to learn, but to help others learn as well.
It could sometimes be difficult, though, to figure out where to start. Here’s the best place to start: with you. Find something that in all the time you’ve been in school, in all of the time that you’ve been taught things and told to learn and understand things, that you want to help others understand.
What I’m going to say next may potentially come of as being not quite appropriate for any number of reasons, ranging from projecting experiences that you maybe don’t relate to at all or from simply just being a white guy talking about shit that he maybe doesn’t completely have a goddamned clue about. If it does come off as such, just straight up tell me and I’ll learn from it.
Here it goes anyways:
Here’s the first potential idea that came to mind: In reading prior comments, I gather that you are a young Mulsim man with a mild anxiety disorder. In our current zeitgeist, that’s a hell of a challenge that you are faced with every single day, through no fault of your own. I’d guess that you are regularly faced with idiosyncratic behaviors and actions towards you, both on a personal level and in every known form of media, for something that you have no power over. It’s not an easy thing to deal with on a regular basis.
If this assignment is truly about walking in the shoes of another, then take your shoes off and offer them to others. Teach them what it is like to walk in your shoes; not out of spite or out of anger, but out of a desire to connect - to show people how unwarranted the misconceptions that underly their reactions to you are. Show them that you are as human as they are, and you feel the same things that they feel. The world that the media presents to you each and every day knows the differences between you and it. Teach it the similarities; the commonalities.
You feel anxiety? Take that anxiety and use it. Redirect it in a positive manner. Be open about the anxiety that you deal with every day, tell them that the anxiety might just garble the message you’re trying to get across, but you’re going to try anyways. You want to show them what it means to walk in your shoes, show them the challenges that you face, and try to find a way to relate your challenges to theirs in order to find commonality and establish something to build from.
You might just find that not only will you be surprised by the receptiveness you might get, but you may also realize that some of your own anxiety is unfounded, and possibly even begin to learn how to handle it.
If you don’t want to do something so personal, there are other ideas. But at the end of the day, start with yourself. It’s the one thing you can be most certain of, and as a result is the best launching point for any kind of pursuit like this. Find something that strikes a chord with you personally, and find a way to turn it into a positive thing to share with others.
