Should I post the dashcam footage and risk being lambasted by YouTube commentators? I feel guilty in retrospect, but be damned if I am going to to 25 in a 45 for the next mile while waiting for the next passing zone to open up.

Why feel guilty? If you’re doing 20 under the limit you deserved to be passed. I’ve passed people in similar situations, especially on back roads. Like hell you’re about to spoil my enjoyment of this road.

Fun fact: in Ohio, if the vehicle ahead is going less than half the speed limit, there’s no such thing as a no passing zone.
(This was part of a bicycling bill that was passed in 2006, but it also got support because of tractors in rural areas.)

I’d have done the same. I remember traveling to the Azores and finding that nearly every road allowed passing anywhere that was reasonable. Like, nearly anywhere outside of a village, you just had to decide if you had room. Almost like they trusted their citizens to make reasonable decisions behind the wheel and suffer the consequences if not.
Around me there are at least 2 passing zones I can think of that have since been re-painted with double yellows. The little symbols on the road side still show it as a passing zone (teeny little white signs that indicate the pattern change in the lines). WTF? I still use those every once in a great while. BOTH are in areas where you’ll be stuck for the next 10 miles, no joke, if you can’t get by.

I was pulled over in the westy once;
Officer said, “You know, there is such a thing as going too slow..”
I was taking it home from the shop and had just had the transmission seals replaced, so I was taking it a bit too easy on the highway and ended up with some traffic behind me.. I looked back in the mirror and saw a patrol car coming up the line - then he pulled in right behind me and lit up.. oops.

my take on it is this: if i’m behind you for more than 3 minutes, and you aren’t moving over and going below the limit, I will pass when it is
safe
to do so.
quick acceleration on bikes also helps make these moves quick and less risky.

I think its a law here too, but they have to be going less than half the limit or turning or some other thing that they may have been doing but I was too busy downshifting to 2nd and flying past them at 50 to notice.

Passing is safer at night. You can see the glow of headlights well before you see the oncoming car. I feel that, in the absolute worst case scenario, a good lawyer could get any charges dropped considering what you did was pretty much definitely the safer alternative to sitting behind this guy at around half the speed limit just waiting to be rear-ended.

If they were going that slow, you were totally in the right. At my old office, ours and a number of other office complexes shared the same service road. Invariably, we’d all leave at the same time, but many of the assholes in the other complexes wouldn’t hesitate to pull out right in front of you. I’m talking, you’re heading down a road at 50mph and they turn right in front of you, not even hesitating. It got to the point where IDGAF mentality took over and I didn’t even slow down and just passed those sonsofbitches.

I wouldn’t post it, but I don’t have any problem with illegal overtaking as long as it is done safely, aka:
1). Can you see far enough ahead that there are no oncoming cars?
2). Is the person going egregiously slow?
3). Go for it!

If the pass was SAFE, then I see that as key. Whether the guy painting the yellow stripes made the right judgement in the past is less important than if the people actually driving their cars make the right judgment at the time.
Even when I’ve driven a pretty quick car, there have been legal passing zones in which I’ve elected not to pass, because I made the judgement the visibility and/or conditions made the pass unsafe. The painted lines are a guide, but aren’t the same thing as physics.
